How can I cancel justhost.com account? SUCKS!

I never dreamt of suffering from lousy deals with justhost dot com again. The nightmare just started with an invoice a month ago. The document charged me annual hosting fee with several options identical to what I have signed up February 2009.

Some dissatisfaction made me leave the hosting service around April 2009. Then, I thought that everything was settled down without any problem. I got confirmation of account cancellation. That was why I could get prorated refund by proper credit card transaction.

I dropped so many lines of appeal that I was not a subscriber any more. Billing department answered for my messages with bureaucratic comments generated by automated reply system. Several staffs responded in person, however, next reply was neglected same way. They insisted that my account was still active because I had not done cancellation process last year. I could not believe it. I wondered how the account was active. If so, what was the refund that I got last year?

Whether my account was still active or not, I did not want to pay for unwanted hosting service. I requested them to cancel the account with full refund every day and night. I did not utilize any facilities from justhost.com, of course. In the long run, they processed my request with PRORATED refund in a month. What an appalling customer care?

What I am afraid of now is that they may charge me next year again. That must not happen, however.

Migration to Movable Type 5; painful but hopeful

Keeping user's own data consistently requires painful process always, for example, in front of software update and/or hosting relocation. This is (was) also the case with Movable Type to some extent. Shortly speaking, this blog post rendered from Movable Type 5 platform in success. Let me share my experience how I managed to migrate from version 4 to brand new 5 with all articles as well as custom templates.

First of all, here are my configurations that you may want to know about.

Old configuration

Movable Type 4.3x
ActionStream 2.1
Cumulus 1.2

New configuration

Movable 5.01
ActionStream 2.1 (MAKE SURE to get it from here or refer to forum Q&A)
Cumulus 1.2 (the same as from old configuration)

In brief, I tried these steps

Back up entries (menu "Export Entries" from old installation)
Create new database for Movable Type 5 (kept Movable Type 4 database untouched)
Install fresh Movable Type 5 (kept Movable Type 4 installation untouched) with plugins
Import entries (menu "Import Entries") at new installation
Copy custom template from Movable Type 4 to 5 MANUALLY (copy & paste; labor intensive but sure bet)
Copy configuration of plugin(s) as needed (the same as above)

Above procedure is just one out of numerous ways you may think of. My goal was to populate old articles with Movable Type 5 by fresh installation. Automated upgrade from Movable Type 4, you may choose if you don't want to be bothered about complexity of migration over fresh installation.

I (also you, probably) encountered two hurdles in the middle of migration. One was incompatibility of ActionStream 2.1. Resolution was already here (just download version 5 aware port!). The other was how to import entries because the dashboard did not show me any clue how to do. Now, let's dive into details and workaround which I escaped from stalemate with.

Upon the first sign-in after the installation process, one special blog (new term called "Website" from Movable Type 5) will be available. It is a kind of an aggregator or integral point of its dependent blogs. That's why no "Import Entries" menu can be seen from it.

Just leave this Website untouched for a while. Re-configure the "website" if needed in the future. Then, create a blog under that "website". You will be asked about template set, directory locations, and so forth by the same way you would be on previous installations. Once a new blog is created under the "website", it will bring you all facilities familiar with us. We can see a menu, "Import Entries"

Due to this "website" scheme and the procedure I tried above, your blog ID will be "2" instead of "1" taken by the "website." In most cases on previous Movable Type distributions, the first blog should take blog ID "1", however. This situation will make archive cache corrupt on search engines without any doubt. Configure mod_rewrite (.htaccess) or something like that if corruption matters to you seriously. I did not touch anything because search engines would refresh their cache in the long run. :-)

Except two issues above (action stream compatibility and entry import), everything will be favorable for experienced users in Movable Type installation. I hope this helps. One good news is that new Movable Type now supports "Export theme" facilitating custom templates archive and making it available as a part of blog theme pool in automated manner. No more copy & paste!!

Switching over to iPhone; joy of mobility

One of my recent jokes with colleagues and friends was, "Everything is ready with me except an iPhone." All services as well as facilities that I had subscribed and run were mobile aware and ready to interconnect with mobile devices. The first photo upload dates back to August 2006 at flickr. The first blog post was made April 2005. Others around that time.

With the start of iPhone service a month ago, I signed up subscription plan with black colored handset. The iPhone enabled me to access Internet services from wherever I am. There is no change in services that I would enjoy; however, there is dramatic change in the way of using them with the help of Wi-Fi or 3G network omnipresent.

It's time to say bye-bye to this old handset below. Huh, nearly 5 years with me.

Opening 86th month at Siemens

Seven years and one month. This is the duration of my stay at Siemens. I joined Siemens Ultrasound Group Korea (SUGK) on October 1, 2002. Official division name now is Siemens Ultrasound Systems Korea (SUSKO) since October 2007. Beginning 86th month, I added some old shots for Flickr to recall unforgettable memory so far. (Those shots remind me that so many colleagues left Siemens, too)

Clearing Message Boxes

Having intended not to put a post on this blog for a while (long while as a result, though), I used to devote myself to another challenging things. The last post dated May 29 remained latest post here. :-D The challenging things were near at an end beginning September. However, I could not completely finalize them since the end of the month. "Decision and focus" policy failed in the long run. "Get all, then manage them" I took.

Breaking the silence today, I updated status of services which I had been involved in. Absence from there led the stacking of messages I did not reply to yet. Feedbacks from friends as well as unknown others were responded gently because they were ignored thoroughly so far. There is something notable upon status updates.

Twitter: several became followers who I did not know. I wonder whether I can drop my on-time trace to share with them. Anyway, Twitter should be operational for them. :-D
Plaxo: a certain friend's network suggested several job offers with private email. Headhunters tried to reach me. I did not respond, however. I am still alive on a job market as a hunter's prospective prey or bait :-)
Linkedin: Colleagues updated their networks with me.
YouTube: Channel view marked over 1,500. I realized that my videos were being watched by friends and YouTube folks AT ANY RATE. I can't stop YouTube-ing.
Flickr: Several shots became other's favorites. Somebody pulled the naked David shot for his or her blog. Another person requested me to permit the use of one of my toilet shots by courtesy. The shot does not require permission as long as it is used properly against Creative Common License. It may appear on a certain magazine. (I will let you know when available, Dear readers!)
Mar.gar.in/delicious: nothing special; I just did not do anything.
Facebook/Hi5/Tagged: I could not manage them. So so so many messages :-) However, "Get all, then manage them" discipline will work soon.
Other services I would rarely visit: no idea yet; delete or do something

Fight against bugs and diseases at the farm

Weekend family farm played best role as a gathering point among friends as well as family members so far. Cultivation efforts strengthened friendship and kinship with collaboration. Seeding and transplanting, after all, produced kinds of vegetables for daily consumption. I don't need to include the names of vegetables in my shopping list accordingly.

We intended chemical-free farming at the beginning. It seemed that we would abide by that rule until the end farming cycle (late fall) because we did not feed anything except water. Last visit got us shocked, however. The farm land was covered by endemic diseases and bugs as shown below. Some block damaged seriously whereas others got slightly.

Our block also got affected in several rows and columns. Kale and Pak Choi were nearly gone away or under bugs' bites :-( All of them were digged out entirely

It's clear that we have two options; 1. Applying insecticide 2. Leaving them as a part of nature. We came to a conclusion that you will not apply chemicals as possible. One strategic alternative for leaf vegetables is to harvest them when they become big sprouts (not when they get fully grown) to minimize possibility of exposure to bugs and diseases.

Nothing yet determined for root vegetables of (sweet) potato, bean (victim of wild animals) and maize (smelling yummy for crows)! Give me some idea not to pollute environment and not to harm human at the same time!

I revisited bookmarks maintained at delicious tonight. My bookmarks, so far, just played a role as a pin point whereas intention was to put the bookmarks on my blog with detailed an/or additional information making them available across Internet. However, laziness prevented me from doing so.

A2Hosting.com, 걍 여기 있으련다

Justhost.com 악몽 이후, 시험적으로 이용했던 두 군데 호스팅 업체로부터 환불받는 절차를 오늘에서야 완료했다. 최종적으로 A2hosting.com 에서 2009년도를 보내는 것으로 결정했다. 결국은 세 군데를 놓고 저울질하다 결정한 셈이다.

여전히 nexcess.net은 내가 이용했던 호스팅 회사 중 최고의 업체다. 그렇지만, 비용 대비 몇몇 기술적 제약 때문에 (물론 돈 쏟아 부어 해결할 수 있음:-D) 미국에서 보편적이고도 인기가 있는 unlimited hosting을 당분간 이용할 것이다.

아래는 A2hosting으로 결정한 몇 가지 이유와 그곳 특징이다. 물론, 오늘자 기준이다. 회사 측 사정에 의해 달라지겠지. ㅋㅋ

초기설치: 비용 지급하고 결제하면 관련 메일이 "당근" 날라온다. 하지만, 내용은 아주 충실해서 초기 설치와 관련된 모든 정보가 일목요연하게 정리되어 온다. DNS 호스트, 임시 접속 주소, MySQL 정보 등등... 사용자가 물어 볼만한 모든 정보를 일괄적으로 보내준다. 다른 곳에서 받았던 메일과는 차원이 달랐다.
백업: R1Soft의 Server Rewind가 제공된다. 백업은 회사별로 정책이 있으니까 걱정할 것이 없다. 리스토어가 문제다. 리스토어를 하는 상황은 보통 긴급 상황이다. 회사 측에 요청하고, 받아서 엎어 치고 (아니면 직원 재촉하든가) 등등 손이 많이 간다. 똥줄 타는 상황이 대부분. 하지만, server rewind 환경에서는 실시간으로 리스토어 가능하다. 백업 상태를 언제든 실시간으로 확인할 수 있다는 뜻이기도 하다. 아래와 같은 GUI에서 해당 날짜 클릭하면 tree 구조로 directory 보여준다. 파일 위치 찾아서 버튼만 눌러주면 된다. A2hosting으로 바꾼 가장 큰 이유다.
보안: web server 이외의 서버는 모두 방화벽으로 보호되고 있다. 따라서 호스팅 관리와 접속 방법이 조금 번거롭다. 예를 들면, MySQL을 원격(remote)에서 접속하려면 ssh2 tunneling 기능을 써야 한다. 대신, 안심된다.
사용자 지원: Knowledge base, Wiki, Forum이 잘 되어 있어 직원에게 메일 보낼 일이 거의 없다. Support ticket (이메일) 을 통한 응대 주기가 다소 긴 것이 흠이다. 지금까지는 6시간 정도가 최고였지만, 쉬운 문제는 다른 업체와 마찬가지로 1시간 내외면 답을 받을 수 있다. A2hosting에 정착한 두 번째 이유다.

아랫도리의 부실함, 그 이후

"당신의 블로그, 아랫도리(하단)는 안녕하십니까?"에 감동 받아 내 홈피를 유심히 살펴보았다. 본문 활용도를 높이려고 열(column)을 자유자재로 구성하는 노력은 열심히 했다. 그러나 나의 아랫도리 역시 부실했다. 무버블타입이 제공하는 기본 template 외에 해 놓은 조치가 아무것도 없었으니 홈피 하단의 황량함은 이루 말할 수 없었다. 잠깐 시간 내서 아랫도리 수정해 놓았다. 전과 비교해 뭔가 꽉 찬 느낌이 확실히 든다. ㅋㅋ

무한 삽질, 주말 농장을 말하다

참살이 바람을 타고 주말 농장이 인기다. 집안의 숙원 사업 중 하나이기도 해서 2009년 4월 4일 드디어 5평 넓이의 주말 농장을 시작했다. 첫 삽을 뜬 이후 한 달 정도 지났다. 그간 일어난 왕초보 농사꾼의 좌충우돌 경작기와 느낌을 정리했다. 멋모르고 시작한 초짜의 심정이라고 보면 된다. 주말 농장을 할까 말까 고민하는 있는 "초짜" 에게 도움이 되었으면 한다.

주말에만 가면 된다? 답은 "매일 가야 한다."다. 주말이라는 단어에 현혹되어 주말 작업으로 모든 것이 해결될 것 같은데 실제로는 그렇지 않다. 규모만 작을 뿐 일반적인 농업, 농사다. 이게 본질이다. 극단적으로 말하면 24시간 항시 대기다. 그날 일기에 따라 해야 할 것이 매번 달라지는 고난의 연속이다. 가족 구성원 중 한 명은 최소한 이틀에 한 번 정도 가야 한다. :-D
유기농이 가능하다? 유기농의 기준을 어디에 두느냐에 따라 달라지겠지만, 무농약과 무약품 등의 관점에서 보자면 주말 농장은 이 같은 환상과 거리가 먼 것 같다. 정말로 순수한 유기농을 실현하는 주말 농장도 있을 것이다. 그렇지만, 대부분 비료 농약 없이 무엇을 재배한다는 것은 불가능해 보인다. 다만, 대규모 상업적 농업과 비교해 상대적으로 농약 비료를 "덜" 사용한다는 것을 유기농으로 볼 수도 있을 것이다.
사 먹는 것보다 싸다? 비싸면 비쌌지 절대 싸지 않을 것 같다. 주말 농장에서 (주로 밭농사다.) 재배하는 것은 주로 (쌈) 채소류와 구황 작물이다. 이들의 연간 재배 비용을 최소 기준으로 계산해보자. 농장 연간 임대료 5만 원 지급했다. 5평 기준으로 싼 편이다. 첫날, 퇴비로 1만 원 지급했다. 종자 비용으로 1만 원 정도 들었다. 종자 1봉이 평균 2,000원 안팎이다. 모종 형태로 (어느 정도 자란 작물을 사서 옮겨심기) 재배하기 시작하면 돈이 감당 안 된다. 여기까지만 해도 7만 원이다. 봄에 심거나 뿌린 작물이 죽지 않았을 때 얘기다. 교통비, 시간/노력비용, 농약 값 등도 제외했다. 각자 이런저런 비용 나름대로 고려해보자. 사 먹는 것보다 쌀 수가 없을 것이다.
그럼에도, 왜? 한 달 동안 삽질의 연속이었다. 물 주는 시기를 놓쳐 (정말 일주일에 한 번 갔더니만 ㅋㅋ) 씨가 다 죽어 밭 일부를 갈아엎었다. 모종을 사다 심었는데 다음날 비바람이 몰아쳐 몇몇이 꺾어져 죽었다. (이후 지지대를 세워 하나씩 고정했다.) 실패에 대한 무력감과 예상치 않은 추가되는 비용 때문에 스트레스 점점 쌓여간다. 그렇다면, 왜 주말 농장을 하는가? 주말 농장과 농사짓는 일은 가족 간 화목과 단합을 이끌어 내는 힘을 가지고 있다. 풍작이라는 공통 관심사를 향해 온 가족이 연중 자연스럽게 협업하는 형국을 갖추게 된다. 유아나 아동에게는 체험 학습의 장을 제공한다. 매주 소풍 가는 듯한 느낌이 든다.

겁 없이 달려들어 무지 고생하고 있다. 혹시 내년도에 주말 농장 계획 중인 분들은 위 내용 다시 음미하시라. 이미 발 들여 놓은 나는 어쩔 수 없이 올해 가을까지 쭈~~~욱 가야 한다. 아~ 삽질이여.

한겨레 스러운 사은품, 공정 무역 (fair trade) 제품

한겨레21 정기구독자 사은품을 며칠 전에 받았다. 내용물은 손수건과 비누. 모두 공정 무역을 통해 생산되어 유통되는 물건이라는 해설과 함께. 공정무역을 끊임없이 소개해온 잡지에 걸맞게 사은품도 공정 무역 제품이었던 것이다.

구매와 소비는 전적으로 주관적 선택의 문제이지만 지난 수년간 머리로는 공정 무역에 공감했다. 그러나 기존 유통 질서에 묻혀 무의식적으로 지내다 보니 행동으로 옮기기가 쉽지 않다. 관련 매장을 찾거나 실제 구매를 해본 적도 없다. 혹시나 싶어, 비누 뒷면에 있는 홈피에 (fairtradekorea.co.kr) 접속했다. 유통되는 물건의 종류가 생각보다 다양했다. 뭔가 살 것이 생기면 일단 여기 한번 둘러봐야겠다.

It's darker under a candle. (등잔 밑이 어둡다) This Korea's proverb implies that vicinity does not necessarily guarantee closeness in mind or whatever. In this way, Café Street nearby my office was out of reach since the settlement at KINS tower, JeongJa-dong.

At last, I lunched out with colleagues at a certain Chinese restaurant, one of bustling spots there. Soft breezing made us garrulous over nice dishes all the way of lunch hour. Gee, however, not cost effective! :-D

Quarterly Review of Year 2009

A rat race routine life stalked my progress in the first quarter of this year. I couldn't still figure out how to manage whatever I was supposed to do. Here are action items to tackle with. (this list is derived from Year 2008 review) Evaluated status as well as revised planning on the action items are now shown here

Book Keeping: just started (I can visualize instant cash flow at any point, GNU Cash is a very good tool!)
Diary Keeping: not yet started (hm... I have to squeeze myself to get 30 minutes more per day)
Roadmap Establishment: nothing done (damn!, I even can't figure out direction)
Japanese Learning: no advance with a certain reason (I have to put my name on a cram school roster ASAP)

JustHost.com SUCKS!

The JustHost.com offered its service beginning with "Congratulations, you have been chosen by our CEO for platinum status." Fury toward its way of marketing arose, then. (You Have Been Chosen, Earthling) It was a beginning to make me come to an end to close hosting account. Here is story how and why I cancelled. They abused confidence and faith from customers. (You may take advantage of half priced hosting service that they may offer when you initiate cancellation process. Read up to the end of this post if you want to know how you can get that offer!)

Just before I signed in this hosting service, everything was shown completely giving best knowledge about services listed in web pages. However, it did not provide what kind of additional services are available with detailed pricing information. As shown below, there are additional services of Daily Backup, Priority Support, Private SSL, and Dedicated IP address. Their price range was acceptable and relatively cheap. However, their fees were not refundable! I subscribed Daily Backup by accepting their non-refundable policy because I expected quality service all through this year. I had committed critical mistake. :-( Simply speaking, there are not hidden fees but hidden services non-refundable.

I did not suspect quality service. This was my second mistake. When I requested backup archive of a specific date, service staff couldn't locate it. When I asked the person about server side backup schedule and terms of service of Daily Backup, I got no answer. This moment, I just considered hosting cancellation at the expense of non-refund. I did not plan to open my story yet because everything, I think, was my faults.

Anyway, I initiated cancellation. I was shocked. The cancellation page showed me counteroffer by 50% refund with hosting continuation. I couldn't stand it! It was beyond my endurance. I just closed because I was fed up with its lousy enticement.

Upgrade to Movable Type Motion (4.25) and simple review

Social network platform, Movable Type Motion, released recently. In effect, Movable Type version 4.25 includes the Motion as a key feature as well as legacy blogging modules and templates like Classic Blog, Action Stream, Professional Website, Community Blog, and Community Forum distributed independently under respective license terms. My blog still runs as personal web pages on Professional Website template that I can not find any reason to transit to the Motion. (Refer to this link how the Motion works)

Upgrade to 4.25 was at my fingertips because there was no special change on Professional Website templates. Several enhanced features shared across modules presented me convenience. Of them, I would like to mark high scores on a couple of functions below.

1. Action Streams: Blog post became part of Action Stream enumeration. I don't need to roll out article RSS separately. This will provide me with simplified site design by consolidating scattered atom links into single one. (I will renovate blog layout soon)

2. Versatile Authentication Methods: Fight against spams would put barriers in front of comment entry pad. A blog would demand Movable Type specific or inconvenient sign-in methods. That inconvenience kept potential visitors willing to drop a comment away from intensive communication with blog authors. Now, whatever your account is, Movable Type will accept yours with ease.

N Seoul Tower, located at the top of Namsan, the center of Seoul city, boasted its illumination as shown below. At last, my handy camera, Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS, succeeded in capturing fantastic views with acceptable image quality. I used to rush into getting in and out the observatory due to tight travelling schedule with my guests in most cases.

Weekend Family Farm (the first day)

Located at the foot of Suri san (mountain), 16.5 square meters land space got committed to my family for yearly cultivation only. This is called, weekend family farm, 주말농장. Aiming at full supply of KimChi (김치) material for KimJang (김장), I got around to field arrangement last weekend. It was the first time in my life that I had plowed farm field not for fun. During this spring and coming summer, I will grow varieties of vegetables like chilly, lettuce, young radish, kale, and so on. I have to be keen to weather forecast as a farmer from now on. :-)

다국적 기업 (취업)? 오해와 진실

지난 주말 도서관에 가서 책을 몇 권 빌렸다. 서가 여기저기를 눈팅 하다 선정적인 제목의 책을 하나 발견하였다. (취업, 다국적기업에 올인하라 [연봉 상위 1%의 천국], 2007년 10월, 홍익출판사) 꼼꼼히 읽을 책은 아니어서 큰 제목을 중심으로 훑어 보았다. 내 회사 생활과 책의 내용과 일치도를 판단하는 수준에서.

내용 대부분이 내 상황과 거의 일치했다. 나는 계속 같은 회사에 다니고는 있지만, 짧은 경험에 비추어 다른 회사도 마찬가지일 것이라는 생각이 들었다. 다국적 기업에 대한 환상의 실체를 객관적으로 기술한 부분은 상당히 공감되었다. 영어에 대한 얘기도 그렇고.

이런 차에 allblog.net에 올라온 "좋은 사장님!!! 저 일자리 구합니다."이라는 글을 읽었다. 흠, 요즘 정말 취업 힘든가 보다. 내가 있는 곳 역시 신입 사원이 언제 들어왔는지 기억이 나지 않을 정도다. 2002년 당시 나 역시 반 백수로 몇 개월 이상을 살며 구직자의 스트레스를 경험하기는 했다. 만약 내가 지금 다시 구직 중이라면? 상상할 수 없을 만큼 끔찍할 것 같다. (구직자들께는 죄송!)

그 끔찍함을 감내하고 있을 2009년도 구직자들에게 가장 큰 위안은 취업 성공 그 자체일 것이다. 능력만 되면 모두 취업시켜 주고 싶다. 그렇지만, 내가 그럴 능력도 안 되고 그럴 위치에 있지도 않다. 당근. 모쪼록 여기 남기는 정보가 조금이나마 보탬이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.

일단 다국적 기업에 관심 있는 분은 앞서 얘기한 책 일독 권한다. 여기에서는 책에 언급된 내용의 부연 설명과 몇몇 놓치기 쉬운 사항만 적는다. 아래 내용은 주관적이고 지극히 개인적인 경험일 수도 있기 때문에 나름대로 가려서 이해해 주셨으면 한다. 그렇지만, 다국적 기업에 근무 중인 지인들과 많은 부분 공감하는 내용이기도 하다.

영어: 책에도 언급되었지만, 영어는 의사소통 수단일 뿐이다. 더욱 중요한 것은 주어진 상황이나 문제를 적절히 정리하고 해결하는 것이다. 그게 되고 나서 내용을 영어로 정리하면 된다. 정리 과정에는 기본 의사소통 수준의 영어만 되면 된다. 문법, 단어? 말만 통하고 돈 버는 데 문제없으면 된다. 회사는 이윤 창출이 궁극적 목적이다. 영어 능력 경연장 아니다. 마음만 먹으면 일 년 내내 영어 한마디 안 하고 근무할 수 있는 부서나 직종도 있다. (내가 그렇다.) 다만, 정말로 능통한 영어 실력이 중요한 자리라면 (대표적으로 외국인 임원 비서 같은 자리) 채용 공고에 구체적으로 그렇게 쓰여 있다. 그렇지 않다면 기본 실력 위주로!

급여: 그야말로 천차만별일 것으로 상상 된다. 상상이라고 말한 이유는 그 어느 곳보다 급여에 대한 기밀 유지가 철저하기 때문이다. 호봉제 비슷한 분위기로 가는 회사에서도 개인 급여에 대한 사항을 묻는 것은 금기 사항이자 고용 계약 위반이기도 하다. 최악에는 퇴사까지도 감수해야 하는. 얘기하고 싶은 것은 월급에 목매지 않았으면 하는 것이다. 나 역시 어떤 친구들과 비교해 보면 월급이 많기도 하지만, 다른 친구들과 비교해서는 형편없게 적기도 하다. 말단 직원으로 입사한 직후 급여 때문에 실망한 적도 솔직히 있었다. 그러나 급여 외의 다른 요소까지 종합해 보면 급여 문제는 절대 변수가 아닌 것 같다.

복리후생: 대부분이 오해하는 것 같다. 다국적 기업? 대부분 아주 큰 회사다. 그러나 한국 지사, 지부만 놓고 본다면 보통은 인력 규모나 매출은 한국 대기업을 따라갈 수 없다. 따라서 복리후생의 규모, 종류, 질 등에 있어서도 국내 대기업과 비교하기에는 무리가 있다. 물론 회사마다 다르겠지만 이러한 기본적인 상황을 고려해야 입사 후 마음이 편해진다. 한국 대기업보다 좋은 복리 후생이면 행운이다. 아니면 한국 기업이 해주지 않는 다른 복리후생 제도가 있을 것이다.

휴가: 휴가가 복리후생일까? 복리후생 차원 이전에 법적인 문제를 생각해 봐야 한다. 다국적 기업은 인지도와 도덕성에 예민하기 때문에 법적인 문제에 민감하다. 회사의 자발인 노력이든 강제적인 법 근거이든 간에 회사 운영은 기본적으로 국내법을 따르게 된다. 그야말로 법대로. 회사가 법정 휴가 일수 또는 그 이상을 보장하고 있다. 심지어는 휴가 사용을 적극적으로 권장하고 있다. 이것 역시 노동법에 근거하고 있다. 경조사 있으면 그때 휴가 내면 되고, 출산 예정이면 그때 쉬면 된다. 싸게 외국 여행 가고 싶으면 비성수기 때 떠나면 된다. 대부분 회사가 온갖 편법과 눈치 주기 신공을 통해 휴가 사용을 간접적으로 제한하는 것이 현실이다. 같이 근무하는 어떤 동료는 이렇게 말한다. 휴가를 쓸 수 있다는 것이 이전 직장보다 상대적으로 낮은 급여를 상쇄하고도 남는 큰 가치라고.

[독후감] 젊은 날의 깨달음 (고민 좀 하고 살자!)

아홉 저자의 젊은 날의 회상을 엮은 책이다. 단순한 연대기적 글도 있고, 독자에게 호소 투로 쓴 글도 있고, 한국 사회에 대한 날카로운 비판을 담은 글도 있다. 책 전체로 보면 구인 구색이라고 보면 된다. "인물과 사상사"에서 펴낸 책이다. 대략적인 방향은 감 잡을 수 있을 것이다.

10대에 사춘기를 겪는다고 우리는 보통 말한다. 그때가 지나면 인생의 큰 고비를 넘겨 성인으로 올바르게 살아갈 것 같다는 막연한 기대감도 생긴다. 그러나 사춘기를 지나자마자, 아니면 사춘기가 어떻게 지나갔는지도 모르게, 우리는 또 다른 생존 경쟁에 휩싸인다. 기계적이고 반복적인 삶에 적응하고 나면 20대 중반이나 30줄에 접어든다. 또 다른 허무함과 고민이 몰려올 때다.

그들의 젊은 날 역시 혼돈 속에서 자아 정체성 확립을 하기 위한 자기 분열의 시기였다. 젊은 날의 고민, 고민에 대처하는 자세, 진솔한 감내 과정이 결국은 각자의 "젊은 날의 깨달음"이었다. 나 역시 요즘 조금씩 "깨달음" 중이다. 이 책이 깨달음 속도를 급격히 높여 주었다. 그들과 같은 삶을 살아야 하는 것은 아니다. 하지만, 그들이 겪었던 "깨달음" 과정이 우리 각자에게도 필요한 것은 분명하다. 방법을 각자 찾으면 된다.

자금 사정으로 200불 정도 주고 쓰던 호스팅 업체를 뒤로하고 새로운 호스팅 업체를 알아봤다. 다른 나라 것도 검토해 봤지만, 한국과 미국 호스팅과 비교하면 말도 안 되는 수준으로 비쌌다. 한국을 떠난 나름 이유가 있었기에 계속 미국에 정착하는 것으로 결론. 최종적으로 justhost.com 에 안착해서 이렇게 글을 올린다. 오늘 자 기준으로 121.25불 1년 비용 지급했다. 다년 계약이면 더 싸진다. 하지만, 이 바닥 경쟁이 워낙 심해 내년쯤에 다시 알아볼 생각이다. 더 내려가길 바라면서... ㅋㅋ

검토 과정을 간략히 정리했다. 한국 떠나고 싶은 분들은 참고하시라. 셀 수 없이 많은 호스팅 업체가 있으나 아래 몇 가지 사항만 알고 있으면 선택에 도움될 것이다.

월 사용료 5,000원 안팎, 상당 수준의 인지도, 기타 중요하게 생각하는 조건을 충족하는 업체 몇 개를 찾아 놓고 고심했다. 아래 호스팅 업체를 구글에 넣으면 유사, 경쟁 업체 많이 뜬다. 다른 사항까지도 고려해 무수히 많은 다른 호스팅 중에서 고르는 것은 알아서 하시고...

SSH/FTP 계정 지원: 가장 기본
MySQL: 당연한 얘기지만, 테이블 무제한 말고 "DB를 자유롭게 생성하고 관리"할 수 있어야 한다.
MX record 조정: Google 애플리케이션 사용하려면 수동이든 자동이든 조정할 수 있어야 한다.
CRON: 안 쓰는 사람 많겠지만, 난 한국에서 이거 안 돼서 미국으로 이사 왔다. 미국은 안 되는 업체가 이상한 업체
GCC등 컴파일러: 공돌이가 아니면 쓸 일 없겠지만, 있으면 가끔 쓸 일 생김
HDD/Bandwidth: 필요한 만큼

위 기준으로, 요즘 잘 나간다는 업체를 아래와 같이 추렸다.

위 업체들의 추가적이고 예상치 못한 공통점 및 관련 참고 사항은 아래와 같다.

HDD/Bandwidth/DB: 요즘 거의 덤핑 분위기, 무제한이다. 여타 업체들도 무제한이거나 수천 Gb로 제한하고 있다.
GUI 지원: 호스팅 관리를 위해 cPanel이라는 프로그램 지원. 써 보니 정말 편리. 호스팅 선택 기준에 cPanel 제공 여부가 들어갈 정도임. 이거 잘 쓰면 SSH로 로그인할 일이 거의 없음
Anonymous FTP: 별로 효용 가치가 없을 것 같은데 나로서는 아주 필요한 기능이기도 했음. 이런 기능을 제공한다는 것 자체가 의외였음. HDD 무제한인 상황이라면...
Perl/PHP 설치/설정: 사용자 개인 영역에 설치하는 것이기는 하지만 자동화되어 있음. cPanel에서 클릭만 해주면 됨
Backup/restore: 서버 수준에서 백업하는 것 말고 내 자료를 내가 백업하고 언제든 리스토어 하는 기능. 정말 안심이 됨 :-)
Remote MySQL 설정: 이쯤 되면 감이 오겠지만, 미국 호스팅은 다 풀고 중요한 것만 막자 주의다. 자신의 DB에 접근 가능한 외부 IP를 설정하는 기능이다.
Demo 프로그램 지원: 실제 상황과 똑같은 cPanel을 제공한다. 회사마다 cPanel 메뉴 구성이 조금씩 다르다. 궁금하면 돌려보면 된다.
Money back guarantee: 원하면 30일 이내 무조건 환급. 일단 지르고 봐도 됨. ㅋㅋ
On-line live chat (고객 지원): 영어로 해야 하는 부담은 있지만, 연중무휴 고객 센터 이용 가능하다. 물어보면 바로 답해 준다. 고객은 왕!

세부 사항은 업체마다 조금씩 다르다. 무료인 경우도 있고 유료인 경우도 있다. 차분히 물어보면 된다.

대략 이렇게 정리하고 네 업체 중 hostmonster에 등록했다. SSH를 활성화하는 순간 뚜껑 열렸다. 사진 붙은 신분증명서인 운전 면허증이나 여권 사본이 있어야 접속 가능하단다. 직접 물어보니 bluehost, hostgator도 같은 정책 유지하고 있었다. 개인 정보를 미국 사기업에까지 넘겨야 하나? 된장.

Justhost는 아래와 같이 전화로 본인 확인만 했다. 집이나 휴대 전화로 전화가 오면 기계가 영어로 불러 주는 숫자 4개를 인증 창에 넣으면 된다. 고객은 왕인 관계로 아주 천천히 불러 준다. 카드 결제가 되려면...ㅎㅎ

대신 JustHost는 SSH, Anonymous FTP, 자동 백업이 유료였다. 그놈의 신분증 때문에 예상치 못한 추가 비용이 발생했지만, 서비스 대만족! 하드는 언제 다 채우나... ㅎㅎ

A Movable Type on JustHost.com; configuration tips

More than one year experience using a Movable Type (MT) pushed me diving into a hosting jungle to economize allowance. This year's hive is justhost.com. I encountered several anomalies in the middle of MT migration, then, fixed them by analyzing error logs as well as referring to MT documentation. Here are several configuration tips undocumented elsewhere. Ah, let me know if somebody had already documented :-) I hope followings will help you enjoying MT.

In .htaccess, add two lines below

Web hosting review: NEXCESS.NET for a Movable Type

Relatively high subscription fee (over 200 USD for GETTING HITS plan as of March 2008; look at my account panel below) from my pocket paid for stable run of Movable Type (MT) over the last year. I strongly recommend this service to whoever wants to be absorbed in article posting not in chores from UNIX administration. Flavor of an MT will stay with you always without any pain in maintenance.

Repetitive installations at the beginning of MT blogging deprived me of much time. I am a UNIX geek, though. Getting accustomed to MT administration in details was one of challenges at that time. Limitation of hosting services in Korea was another burden. Upon the decision to move from Korea, I had to pick NEXCESS.NET out of hosting services listed here not to waste time any more.

It turned out to be safe bet. Everything was ready for MT and me at the initial log on. MySQL database creation, MT source code unpacking, and "mt-config.cgi" modification were all that I did. There was no need to move here and there to ask staffs to adjust account environment to MT; perl module installation, required binary installation, .htaccess modification, and so on. I never suspected server incompatibility with MT. Then, it was always true when I encountered problems in MT administration. Extremely speaking, most of my support requests staying at this service were non-MT issues. This MT friendly web space made me spend more time on blog contents and their interconnectivity to other services.

As a hosting service in general standpoint, it delivered high quality user support. In most cases, the first reply from the customer center notified me of task completion. Instead of re-asking an issue (you might experience this context at other places), they tried their best to figure out solutions from my single line question. Support staffs did not simply drop guideline URLs but did do something themselves for customers. Furthermore, I never waited for the first human response more than ten minutes then could get final results within half an hour. I could always issue a ticket with newly appeared problems only. Once resolved, never reappeared.

Critical drawback of relatively high expense at low hosting resources (bandwidth, disk, database space) may keep you from this service. However, MT readiness and good quality of service will pay you. Nightmare of wrestling with UNIX? Joy of blogging? It's up to your decision.

이전 버전에서는

한글로 된 (라틴계 문자가 아닌 경우인 것으로 추정) 폴더로부터 사진을 불러 오거나
파일 이름이 한글인 사진을 uploadr에 올리면

오류가 발생했다. 폴더를 영문으로만 만들어야 하는 불편함이 있었다. 여간 귀찮은 일이 아니었다. 오래 전에 야후 측에 문의 했지만 개선의 기미가 보이지 않았는데 3.1.3을 깔아 보니 아래와 같이 잘 동작함. ㅋㅋ 만세!

The fire originated nearby, then propagated to Naksansa and its outskirts. Most of national treasures of buildings, big bell, and wooden architecture as well as forests turned into ashes. These were what I could hear and remember about 2005's fire breakout.

When I visited there several days ago, its appearance seemed to be better than before. Artificial objects like architectures restored appropriately. Nevertheless, bald mountains and coarse forest still made me frown. Natural resource can disappear within a second but can't recover even in a decade.

Harsh time at Daechongbong, the peak of Seoraksan, for half an hour

The Daechongbong, the peak of Seoraksan, is famous for outstanding beauty with flowers and plants all around. Especially, the autumn season, showing off colorful maples, attracts most of Korean and travelers from overseas. Then, what if at a cold day in winter?

The severity from harsh wind and low temperature was far more than I expected upon our departure for Seoraksan from Seoul. Sensible temperature at the peak marked, at most, -50 degree in Celsius whereas thermometer reads around -26 and wind travels in 16 meter per second. Nobody there could keep standing a second with strong wind. I could manage to move on with the help of rope along the pathway at earthworm speed. I was so scared because failing in rope grasp might have led me to fall down to cliff.

After all, I got to a shelter at the foot of the peak suffering from frostbite on my left cheek, thumb sized area directly exposed to wind. Anyway, I survived extremity. You can imagine how harsh wind was by checking out audio clip that I captured at the waist of Seoraksan, not at the peak. :-( At the peak? It's up to your imagination!

드디어 휴대 전화로 블로깅! (Twitter 흉내 내기와 개선 방향)

휴대 전화로 블로그에 글 올리는 기능을 이번 설악산 산행 때 시험했다. 집 컴퓨터를 켜 놓아야 하기 때문에 전기료의 압박이 있었지만, 결국은 실행에 옮겼다. 결과는 만족스러웠다. 삼일 중 이틀만 제대로 동작하고 마지막 날에는 통신에 문제가 있었지만, 실황 중계라는 목적은 달성했다.

MSN이라는 안정적인 서비스와 실질적인 표준을 이용한 것이기는 하지만, 범용적이지 못하다는 느낌이 문득 들었다. 휴대 전화를 MSN과 연결해야 하고 한국에서만 가능하다는 점 등을 생각하면 표준 인터페이스로 일반화하기에는 무리가 있어 보인다. 문자열만 재전송(relay) 가능하고 멀티미디어(Multi-Media Stream; MMS) 이용이 불가능한 것은 가장 큰 약점이다. 무료라는 것이 장점이기는 하다. 하지만, 조만간 휴대 전화의 데이터 요금도 감당할 만한 수준으로 내려가지 않을까?

그래서 편법이 아닌 대세를 따르기로 잠정 결론. Flickr와 같이 일반 또는 무선 기기와 연결된 이메일로 블로그와 통신하는 구조로 운용 개념을 변경하기로 했다. 멀티미디어 문제 해결되고 범용화 가능하다. Posting 자동화 스크립트는 있기 때문에 cron을 이용해 이메일을 주기적으로 퍼 나르기만 하면 된다. POP3로 메일 가져오는 도구는 널려 있을 테고...

그렇지만 생각보다 만만하지는 않았다. 어제 몇 시간 동안 gmail을 퍼오는 perl 스크립트를 시험했는데 잘 안 된다. 된장. 세상에 쉬운 일이 없네. 오늘은 여기까지...

한겨울 설악산 (Seoraksan) 산행기

명산 설악산. 다소 어려운 산행이었다. 대청봉 정상 및 부근에서의 추위와 바람 때문이었는데, 나름 준비는 많이 했지만, 자연의 힘 앞에서는 어쩔 수 없었다. 나머지 경로에서는 큰 문제 없었다. 오색-대청봉-회운각-비선대-설악동 경로를 잡았다. 새벽 4시에 출발해 오후 5시쯤 도착했다.

강남 터미널에서 1월 22일 오후 11시 30분에 속초/양양행 버스를 탔다. 양양에서 내렸다. 터미널이 아닌 길가 버스 정류장에서 내리는데 (약간 황당), 내리면 그냥 벌판이다. 내려서 뭘 할 수 있는 곳이 아니다. 그래서 오색까지 택시로 바로 이동했다. 택시비는 2-3만 원 정도였다. 미터 요금으로 가면 된다. 일찍 도착해서 한 시간 정도 대기했다. 4시에 등산로가 열리자마자 출발했다.

정상까지 가장 빠른 경로라고 해서 오색에서 출발한 것인데, 너무 무미건조했다. 캄캄한 새벽 시간이라 보이는 것이 없어서 그런 것이기도 하지만, 등산로 자체가 계단, 아니면 가파른 오르막이다. 관악산의 과천-연주대 코스와 비슷한데 훨씬 재미없다. 아무 생각 없이 너덧 시간 운동 삼아 오른다고 보면 된다. ㅋㅋ

정상인 대청봉에서의 기상 상태는 기온 영하 26도 이하, 풍속 초속 16미터 이상, 체감 온도 영하 53도 이하였다. 중청 대피소에서 들은 대략적인 수치다. 아무 탈 없이 잘 내려오기는 했지만, 대청봉에 경험한 추위와 바람은 기억하고 싶지 않을 정도로 매서웠다. 정상에 오래 머무는 것이 곤란했지만, 거센 바람 때문에 빨리 내려오는 것 역시 어려웠다. 모든 상황은 생명에 위협을 줄 정도였다. 추위에 떨며 엉금엉금 내려왔다. 덕분에 왼쪽 볼에 엄지손가락 만한 동상에 걸렸다. 으~~~ 선글라스와 마스크 사이로 파고든 칼바람 땀시...

대청봉 옆 중청 대피소는 말 그대로 오아시스였다. 언 몸을 녹이고 정신 차리는데 시간 반 정도 썼다. 시간이 지나도 추위가 가시질 않았기 때문이다. 예상은 했지만, 사발면, 어묵 같은 것은 안 판다. 취사도구를 가져가거나 음식물을 싸 가야 한다. 우리 일행이 가져간 과일은 얼어서 먹지를 못했다. 얼지 않은 부식과 자판기 커피로 끼니를 때우고 다시 출발했다.

하산은 등산에 비하면 아무것도 아니었다. 대청봉과 비교하면 추위 바람은 전혀 문제가 되지 않았다. 쌓인 눈 때문에 스파이크 차고 내려왔다. 중청에서의 휴식 시간이 길어 조금 서둘러 내려왔다. 그렇지만, 속된 말로 "널널" 했기 때문에 내려오면서 사진도 많이 찍고, 쉬기도 해서 오후 5시쯤 설악동에 도착했다.

I don't believe in jinx. However, recollecting memories of over the last ten years, I was on right track with that small ring binder whenever I challenged something; getting an admission to Ph.D. course in USA, passing KOV screening, and joining Siemens. 휴대전화로 무버블 타입에 (Movable Type) 글 올리기; 왕 허접

무버블 타입 모션 베타판이 최근에 나왔다. 중요한 기능 중 하나가 마이크로 블로깅이다. 한 줄 블로그? 트위터나 한국의 미투데이 같은 서비스를 내장하겠다는 것이다. 이들 서비스의 특징은 휴대 전화에서 보낸 문자를 서버에서 받아서 처리하는, 이른바 Mobile Originated를 (MO) 구현했다는 것이다. 이후의 평가 판이나 최종 판에서 모션이 특정 지역이나 세계를 대상으로 MO를 지원할 지는 확실하지 않다. 호기심이 발동한데다 심심하기도 해서 MO 흉내내기를 지난 주말에 감행했다. 아래와 같이 대 성공! 전화기에서 보낸 문자가 블로그에 올라간 것이다.

MO 서비스를 제공하는 호스팅 업체를 찾는 것부터 시작했다. 근데 너무 비쌌다. 소켓이나 http 같은 인터페이스를 제공하고 관련 메시지는 서버나 DB에 저장해 주는 호스팅이었다. 블로그에서는 인터페이스를 이용해 데이터를 끌어가기만 하면 된다. 문자 수신과 전달 몇 백 건에 한달 십만 원 이상이 소요되는 서비스였다. 그냥 포기!

시간을 더 투자해 인터넷을 상세하게 뒤졌다. 내 상황에 맞게 무료로 구현이 가능한 방법이 나타난 것이다. 한국 MSN이 운영하는 폰친구 서비스에 가입한 후, MSN 프로토콜로 부터 정보를 낚아 채는 방식이다. 메신저에서 휴대 전화로 문자 보내는 것은 일반 휴대전화 요금과 거의 동일하고, 자기한테 오는 문자를 메신저로 받는 것은 무료! 이게 구현의 핵심이다. 무료로 전달된 문자를 메신저 상에서 가로채 블로그로 올리는 것이다.

이렇게 해서 결국, 휴대 전화에서 보낸 단문이 최종적으로 내 블로그에 올라가는 시스템을 만들었다. 가로챈 문자를 블로그에 올리는 작업에는 이미 작성해 놓은 XML-RPC 스크립트를 이용했다. 위에 보이는 그림이 겉보기에는 평범한 블로그 글처럼 보이지만, 실제로는 내 휴대전화에서 보낸 글이라는 것!!! 기술적인 사항은 여기를 참고하시라!

Perl 스크립트로 무버블 타입에 (Movable Type) 글 올리기

무버블 타입은 외부와의 연동을 위해 XML-RPC 인터페이스를 제공한다. 이 인터페이스를 이용해 플리커에서나 라이브 라이터 등에서 무버블 타입으로 글을 올릴 수 있다. 이런 체험을 통해 무버블 타입 대쉬 보드가 아닌 외부에서 글을 어떻게 올릴 수 있는 지에 대해서 대략 감은 잡고 있었다.

지난 주말에 Perl 스크립트를 이용해 무버블 타입 블로그로 글을 올리는 시도를 해 보았다. 무버블 타입에 설치된 XML-RPC 서버를 이용하는 것이었는데, 결과는 성공적이었다. 설치 디렉토리 안의 XMLRPCServer.pm 소스를 좀 분석하고 관련 글을 참고해서 스크립트를 작성 했다. Frontier-RPC 모듈을 이용했기 때문에 스크립트 작성은 무난했다. 작성한 스크립트를 이용해 내 컴퓨터에서 블로그로 글을 올리는데 성공했다.

간단한 코드이기 때문에 바로 감이 올 것이다. 아이디와 암호만 넣으면 된다. 급조해서 만들었다. 시간 날 때 같은 위치에 변경된 코드를 계속 올릴 계획이다.

예전의 다이어트 메뉴에 약간 변화를 주었다. 중요한 변화는 나또와 미소 국물을 추가한 것이다. 나또는 사서 그냥 포장된 채로 가져오면 되는데, 미소는 약간의 공정이 필요하다. 버섯, 두부, 파를 적당량 썰어 담고 미소를 한스푼 정도 넣어 가져와야 한다. 먹을 때에는 온수를 부어 전자레인지에 2분 가량 돌리면 된다. 미소 준비가 여의치 않을 때에는 순두부 하나를 날로 먹는다. 채소에 드레싱을 하지 않고 먹는 것이 핵심!!! ㅎㅎ

Slight modification onto MSN Module 2.1.2 Revision 102 was a starting point. After understanding how the MSN module worked, I could identify where to put my hack code to dispatch a message to a Movable Type blog. As shown below, IPG notification is always followed by a message in form of XML fired from mobile phone. I just put at most around a hundred lines parsing XML, testing data robustness, and finally sending the message to a blog using an XML-RPC script. That's all and complete.

Now, let me talk about drawbacks and improvement opportunities on this implementation.

Restriction: I was supposed to run this script set on web hosting side. However, hosting server did not allow these scripts to run on server side. All required ports were blocked by firewall. Additionally, most hosting services did not permit back ground process (in case of UNIX variants) running in the manner of infinitive loop. Therefore, I had to operate on my desktop computer. Not a 24 hours a day service now :-)
Limitation: Phone buddy service supports only text message, not multimedia stream
Improvement: This implementation maintained code structure suggested for really time processing. Further investigation on MSN protocol specification revealed Offline Messaging. That is, incoming messages will be stacked if I am off lined. When I log on MSN again, messages stacked can be drawn. This mechanism seems to require additional authentication process. However, this can make scripts run by crontab.

In sum, I have to find MSN ready hosting service (not possible in effect) or run my own (not reasonable) with simple solution above at this moment. Next move for realization will include 1. Coupling proxy connection to bypass firewall 2. Pulling out offline messages from MSN

Six Apart announced beta release of Movable Type (MT) Motion recently. One of key features from Motion is microblogging like Twitter, Pownce (merged to Six Apart already), and me2day (Twitter-like service in Korea; merged to NHN, one of major portals in Korea). One function of microblogging is a sort of mobile originated (MO) services handling data flows from mobile phone on users' palm to server side of Movable Type blog as Twitter and me2day do as of present. I am not sure, however, whether Six Apart will provide MT folks with world wide or regional MO-like service embedded in future release candidate or final release. Therefore, last weekend's endeavor was to mimic Twitter mobile support on MT. Then, I succeeded as you can see screen shot below.

Feasibility study checking out MO service providers in Koreas turned out to be illegible in my budget standpoint. They support http and/or socket interface to store messages fired from handset, then, to make those messages available in service side; MT blog in my case. Simple and easy to implement! However, more than hundred USD per month only with several hundred times of message relay :-(

Instead, turning my eyes onto other references with additional hours led me to some practical as well as free-of-charge approach (in Korean, though) using MSN protocol to hijack messages. MSN in Korea runs business, called phone buddy, in message handling from "messenger tab."

sending messages to mobile phone(s) with flat and the same rate as mobile carrier's
checking phone messages directed to MSN account linked with a certain mobile phone number (my phone number in this case) free of charge :-)

The key idea is to snatch messenger notification when new message arrives, then, to post that snatched message to MT blog!

In the long run, I could post simple lines from my mobile phone onto MT blog by relaying a message headed for MSN account and pushing it to MT with the help of an XML-RPC script shown in this post. Screen shot above may look like ordinary blog posts generated from dash board or direct input upon member logon on MT Motion. However, phone keypad originated those lines. Posting articles to Movable Type blog by self made Perl script using XML-RPC

Movable Type (MT) exposes interfaces to communicate with external services in exchange of actions and/or data with XML-RPC facility. Blog posts saying XML-RPC in Flickr and Windows Live Writer (in Korean, though) made me experience how it works remotely and independently from MT dash board.

Last weekend's experiment to implement my own script to contact MT XML-RPC server resulted in success with the help of this post as well as with an anatomy of XMLRPCServer.pm in MT distribution. The experiment was to post an article from my desktop computer triggered by Perl script that I prepared. Frontier-RPC Perl module facilitated the script preparation by simple API.

A code excerpt here will give you an insight how you can call MT XML-RPC methods prepared and exposed for you. Update for this code will available at the same link whenever available. Hope it helps.

강준만의 각개약진 공화국이라는 책을 읽고 있다. 저자가 한겨레 21을 포함해 몇몇 언론사에 기고했던 칼럼을 엮어 낸 것이다. 소설과 같이 줄거리가 있는 책이 아니어서 부담 없이 시간 날 때마다 한 편씩 읽고 있다. 한겨레 21에 기고한 글이 상당히 많은데 기억나는 글이 별로 없다. 한겨레 21은 지금도 정기 구독하고 있는데 요즘은 꼼꼼히 챙겨 읽지만 2007년도에는 거의 쌓아 두다시피 해서... ㅋㅋ

오늘까지 읽은 부분에서 불현듯 든 생각이, <1극 체제>의 의미가 무엇인가 하는 것이었다. 다양성 없이 한쪽으로 쏠리는 현상일 것이라는 추측으로 몇 번은 넘어갔다. 그런데 읽어갈수록 계속 나온다. 개념 탑재가 필요해서 인터넷으로 검색했다. 같은 어구로 검색되는 최근 글이 있어 읽어 보니 내가 이해한 것이 거의 맞았다. ([강준만칼럼] 국회를 위한 변명) 정리하면 한국은 "다름"을 인정하지 않는, 또는 인정하지 못하는 사회라고 할 수 있다.

원인과 이유가 어찌 되었든, 2009년도 현재 현상적으로 맞다. 튀면 안 되고, 가만히 있어야 중간 간다. 다른 의견을 제시하거나 토론을 위한 질문을 하면 즉시 반대파로 몰리거나 불만 세력으로 둔갑한다. 물론, 이런 얘기를 하는 나도 예전에는 다양성 개념 탑재가 안 된 놈이었다.

개인 가치관은 언젠가부터 1극 체제에서 벗어났다. 정신이 맑아져 해탈한 기분이 들 때가 가끔 있다. 또 가끔은 1극 체제 사회의 구성원이라는 사실을 실감할 때마다 허탈한 감정이 엄습한다. 아 된장!

Let me summarize what I have done in 2008 to reflect what I have done well or wrongly, expect this year's outcome based on this reflection, and feed myself back toward additional and continual challenges which I will devote myself to this year. I might miss several events or happening to put on this post, though. I don't care because here is blog space where I can show whatever as they are. Let me make up those missing items next time or mention them in connection with future 2009's blog posts!

Well done

Japanese learning: I completed six months beginner's dialog courses beginning Japanese character writing in Hiragana and Katakana. I marked attendance ratio by 100%. Monthly step wise test scores marked high (sometimes great!) enough for me to move on to the next grade. I failed in accomplishing seventh class owing to yearend drinking session and personal affairs. However, I came to know how and what to study next. I've just got back from Japanese Chinese character lecture (Kanji). Good student, Hyok!

Blogging: Settlement in nexcess.net March enabled stable operations in running Movable Type with satisfactory quality of service that I wanted from a web hosting service. I got accustomed to manipulating movable type at my disposal. Apart from technical attainment for blogging, I posted 80 articles on this blog with topics ranging from blogging, voluntary services, donations, almanac to trace back important events in the future, meditations, and so on. In sum, stability made me concentrate on article contents itself without time consuming relocation from one hosting service to the others.

Office affairs: Insight, logical thinking, how to make a decision, how to assist manager's decision as a reporter; these are what I attained and got to understand as a company employee as well as a quality assurance engineer in practice not in theory. I will not leave more about this matter because disclosing details on what I have done 2008 at office can be violation of information security guideline at Siemens :-) Anyway, well done, too!

Friendship: There was no dramatic advance in the number of friends that I kept in touch with. My mobile phone now holds nearly 150 phone numbers with around 30 frequent contacts. Adding, modifying, and deleting contact information all through 2008 finally ended with that figure showing the same status in 2007. We say, "Making a foe is easy, however, keeping friendship is far more difficult." In this regard, I succeeded in doing so at the high expense of drinking day time after trekking and night time after work! :-)

Failure, undone, and/or done wrongly

Exams and tests: I marked worst grades and lower points in tests and examinations than I expected while preparation. I have nothing to excuse about the result though I have something. Let me take them as they were. Test is a glass clear transparent to all takers at test date; whoever got a good luck in marking only correct answers from random picking, whoever outperformed without in-depth preparation, whoever suffered from lower health condition even with fullest knowledge, and whoever.

Book keeping: Beginning 2008, one of my resolutions was to keep a book to make cash flows visible and tangible. However, I DID NOT (not "could not") with two excuses; one was because I was lazy (a little understandable) and other was because I could not find appropriate electronic double entry booking application (nerdy am I). GNU cash is now available at my hand. It's clear what I have to do in 2009.

Diary keeping: It's also from my laziness. The last diary article appeared at September 16. I have nothing more to say about this.

Roadmap establishment: Regardless of this summary of 2008, this is never ending task while I am alive. At this moment, I have no direction to approach, no clear picture about who I am and what I have (not financial meaning but potential standpoint), and no roadmap toward my future life as a result. The roadmap that I had established upon university entry made me who I was as of 2002 when I joined Siemens whereas there had been so many successes and failures altogether against short term plans in the middle of chasing the clear ward. Who I am and what I have now are, of course, dramatically far from what I had imagined. Nevertheless, that roadmap always played a critical role and mirror in spurring me whenever I became lazy and gauging whether I was deviated from proper track or not. What shall I have to follow this year? :-(

포천 백운산과 이동 갈비 (Baegunsan)

2009년 1월 1일 새해 벽두를 등산으로 열었다. 친구 놈의 꼬임에 넘어가 멀리 북쪽으로 목적지를 잡았다. 경기도 포천시 백운산. 해발 903미터. 하산 후 이동 갈비 시식으로 일정을 마무리했다.

백운산까지 버스를 이용했다. 동서울 터미널에 가서 사창리 가는 버스에 몸을 실었다. 등산로 시작점은 광덕고개 또는 흥룡사인데 우리 일행은 광덕고개에서 내렸다. 내리는 곳은 간이 정류소 형태로 기사님이 정차 때마다 소리를 치신다. 버스가 근처에 다다랐을 때 기사님께 내릴 곳을 미리 얘기해 놓으면 만사형통. 자고 있으면 깨워 주시겠지. ㅋㅋ

등산로는 광덕고개를 시작점으로 백운산 정상, 삼각봉, 도마치봉, 향적봉, 흥룡사를 거치는 경로를 택했다. 아래 사진의 4번 경로다. 원안은 5번이었는데, 추운 날씨와 쌓인 눈 때문에 휴식과 점심때를 길게 가지는 바람에 막판에 조금 단축된 코스를 선택하게 되었다. 여기를 누르면 확대된 등산로 사진을 상세하게 볼 수 있다.

등산로는 무난했다. 수리산, 청계산 수준의 어렵지 않은 코스. 일기 예보에 눈이 오지 않는다고 해서 스파이크를 준비하지 않고 그냥 갔다. ㅋㅋ 도착해 보니 눈이 안 온 것은 맞는데 겨우내 쌓인 눈이 장난 아니었음. 주위 산세가 좋음. 오전 9시 30분 정도에 출발해 오후 5시 반쯤 하산. 점심 1시간에 휴식 시간이 길어서 그랬는지 오래 걸렸다. 눈밭을 헤쳐 오느라 그런 것도 있고...

흥룡사로 내려와 이동 갈비를 먹으러 갔다. 무식하면 용감하다고 거기까지 걸어갈 작정으로 그냥 걸었다. 중간에 포기하고 버스 탔다. 여러분은 버스를 꼭 타시라. 지나가는 버스를 잡아타고 이동이나 이동 갈비 타운 가자고 하면 된다. 타고 왔던 시외버스나, 시내버스를 만날 수 있다. 우리 일행이 탔던 지점에서 이동 갈비 타운까지 요금은 1,100원이었음. 무조건 현금!

아래와 같이 먹음직한 이동 갈비, 1인분에 24,000원이다. 호주산과 뉴질랜드산을 섞어서 만든다고 원산지 표시를 하고 있다. 막걸리 한잔하고 이동 갈비 타운 버스 정류장에서 동서울 터미널로 돌아옴.

Gaming with lobsters; a maltreatment :-(

Lobsters are staying under water in a cage as shown on the photo below. At the same time, you can, with care, look up outer compartment encompassing lobsters. This whole set of machine is called, crane game. I took this shot as I was on my way to a certain place in Korea.

A video below shows how this sort of crane will operate. Then, imagine what will happen to those lobsters above; it's an explicit maltreatment. :-(

무버블타입 모션 (Movable Type Motion)

지금의 무버블타입 플랫폼으로 일 년여 정도를 버텨 왔는데, 조만간 새로운 플랫폼이 나온다고 한다. 이름은 Motion. 이전 업그레이드와는 다른 획기적인 기능들이 추가되었다. 블로그의 용도와 사용법에 대해 발상의 전환이 필요한 시기가 도래하였다. 업그레이드를 전제했을 때 글 이전과 사용법 적응에 애로가 있어 보인다. 아놔~~

베타 버전을 받아 설치해 보았다. 체험 결과와 무버블타입 공식 홈피에서 얘기하는 주요 특징/장점을 종합해 한글로 정리하면 아래와 같다. 대세는 통합 블로깅~~~

Rich Microblogging: 쉽게 말해 twitter 같은 서비스를 모션 플랫폼에서 직접적으로 지원하겠다고 한다. 최근에 pownce를 합병한 것과 관계있어 보인다. 글을 올리려면 로그인 후에 글을 작성하고 출판하는 (publish) 과정을 거쳐야 했다. Microblogging 기능을 사용하면, twitter와 같이 로그인하자마자 글을 적으면 바로 출판이 된다. 음성, 동영상, 사진, URL 등의 멀티미디어 기능 지원한다.

Action Streams: 이전부터 있었던 기능이다. Action 수집이 가능한 사이트가 늘어나고, 수집 가능한 정보의 종류도 많아졌다. 자신의 블로그에 올린 글에 대한 stream도 지원한다. Action Streams 사례는 여기를 참조 :-)

Sign in with any web account: 특정 사이트에 가서 뭣 좀 하려고 하면, 회원 가입하라고 난리다. 무버블타입 블로그에도 <일부> 해당하는 사항이었다. 이제는 웬만한 유명 사이트의 아이디를 가지고 무버블타입 블로그에 로그인(인증)할 수 있다. 야후, 구글, 페이스북 등 이름만 들으면 알 만한 거의 모든 사이트의 아이디를 지원할 예정이다. 코멘트 하나 남기려고 가입할 필요, 이제는 없다!

Powerful Profiles: 사용자 프로파일 상의 모든 정보와, 변동사항을 통합해 보여준다. 쉽게 말해, 사용자 정보를 클릭하면 해당 사용자의 followers/following, 블로그 정보, action stream 등을 통합해 보여준다.

플리커(Flickr)-무버블타입(Movable Type) 연동

플리커-무버블타입 연동 관련 글을 한글로도 정리해야겠다는 생각을 했는데 이런저런 이유로 미루다 해를 넘기기 직전인 이제서야 부랴부랴 적어 본다.

플리커의 태그와 썸네일을 무버블타입에 그대로 표시하는 방법: 일단 래퍼 스크립트를 만들었다. 여기에 옵션만 주면 관련 정보를 바로 얻을 수 있다. %mydef에 API 관련 정보를 입력하면 된다. 무버블타입을 사용하는 환경이라면 Perl이 동작할 것이기 때문에 이 스크립트도 무리 없이 실행된다. 리턴 값은 XML 형식으로 받게 된다. XML 파서를 써서 관련 내용을 무버블타입으로 불러왔다. 홈피 첫 화면이 아래와 같이 플리커 태그와 썸네일로 채워졌다.
블로그에 올린 글의 태그와 일치하는 플리커 태그 표시하기: 같은 래퍼 스크립트를 이용했다. 블로그 태그 표시란 바로 아래에 플리커 태그가 같이 표시된다. 글의 태그와 일치하는 플리커 태그가 있으면 링크를 보여준다. 없으면 할 수 없고. :-)

국외 2년 봉사 활동이 국외 취업?

지난 12월 13일 [귀국단원 해단식 및 한국해외봉사단원의 밤]에 참석을 했다.

한국에 파견되었던, 지금은 할아버지가 된 한 미국 평화봉사단원도 초청 인사로 참석했다. 그가 연설을 통해 한 얘기 중 흥미로운 것은, 평화 봉사단이 도움을 준 나라 중 한국만이 유일하게 봉사단 프로그램을 포함한 원조를 하고 있다는 것이었다. 원조받던 나라가 원조하는 나라가 되었으니 자랑스러운 일이다.

행사 중간에 묵념 시간이 있었다. 활동 기간 중 사망한 단원들의 이름이 불리고 나서 참석자들은 그들의 혼과 넋을 달랬다. 내가 활동했던 시기였던 1999년 전후에는 활동 중 사망이라는 상황은 거의 상상할 수 없었다. 부족한 점은 있었지만, 신변 안전과 보건 위생에서 만족할 만했기 때문이다.

관련된 통계가 궁금해, 한국국제협력단에 정보 공개 청구하여 그간의 사망자 수와 사고 및 질병 때문인 중도 귀국자 수를 조회해 보았다. (대한민국 국민이라면 누구나 조회 가능) 결과는 생각보다 빨리 나왔다. 궁금증이 가시기는 했지만, 뭔가 찜찜한 느낌...

봉사단 파견 인원 확대를 통한 청년 실업 해소를 위한 정책이 구체화 되고 있다. 논란은 있었지만 얼마 전에도 봉사단 사업 확대가 결국은 이루어졌다. 봉사단 사업 자체의 질적 향상 없이 파견 단원만 늘었다는 비판이 지금까지 늘 제기되어 왔다. (파견 단원 통계 참조) 이런 마당에 파견 단원을 더욱 늘리겠다?

미래는 아무도 모른다. 하지만, 현 봉사단 사업 체계와 결합한 취업난 극복 사업전략에는 문제가 많다는 주장이 귀국 단원 내부에서 꾸준히 나오고 있다. 사망, 보건 위생, 질병과 같은 (풍토병, 상해, 정신 질환 등) 신변 안전 문제가 그 중심에 있다. 당근 그들은 완벽하다고 주장 중이다.

What I did not know about Korea Overseas Volunteer Program

Yesterday's year-end party for returned Korea Overseas Volunteers (KOV) delivered me two notable facts.

One impressive line from the speech (not exact wording but main idea from my memory) was, "Out of all the countries that Peace Corps volunteered for, Korea is the only country implementing volunteer service for developing countries." The speaker was an old Peace Corps volunteer who had stayed in Korea long ago. Their spirits and goal came true only in Korea. At the same time, it may make sense that volunteering goal can hardly be met.

Another session new to me from this year's year-end ceremony was to pay a silent tribute to who died in the middle of volunteering in respective countries dispatched for service. That means that there were KOVs, after my batch, who realized their spirits at the expense of death.

For your reference, the cumulative number of KOVs dispatched up to my batch was below one thousand in 1999. Around 4,500 KOVs (cumulative) completed volunteering in 40 countries so far since the first dispatch of KOVs in 1990. As of today, another 1,500 KOVs are stationed over the world.

2008년도 유급 휴가 23일, 거의 다 썼다. 연말에 잔여 휴가를 소진할 계획을 짜고 있었는데, 회사에서 선수를 쳤음. 크리스마스와 정초 징검다리 연휴를 고려하여 전사적으로 휴무하기로 함. 징검다리 연휴일 경우 중간 날은 휴무하는 관행이 이번에도 확인됨. 자기 유급 휴가에서 공제하지만, 회사 차원에서 노는 것이니 업무 부담도 없고 ㅋㅋ (굳이 이날 근무하여 유급 휴가를 공제하지 않겠다고 하면 인사부에 사유를 통보해야 함, 떱...) 19일까지만 출근하고 새해 들어 출근할까도 생각했는데, 무엇을 하고 놀아야 할지 감당이 되지 않아 포기. 돈도 없고! 내년 유급 휴가 24일. 매월 격주 4일 근무가 가능하겠네? 흠... 아무튼, 2008년은 다 가고 내년에는 무슨 일이 있을지...

오픈아이디(OpenID) 기능은 무버블타입(Movable Type)에 이미 내장되어 이 블로그에 댓글 달 때 아무 문제 없이 사용 가능하다. 그런데, 내 오픈아이디로 접속/이용 가능한 서비스에 대해서는 많은 생각을 하지 않았다. 갑자기 궁금해져 여기 저기 뒤져보니 한국에서도 오픈아이디 도입 논의와 시험이 상당히 진행된 상태였다. 베타 서비스를 시작한 포탈을 포함해 오픈아이디를 지원하는 서비스들 꽤 있음을 알게 되었다. 오픈아이디 저변 확대를 위해 (실은 블로그 홍보가 목적 ㅋㅋ) 같은 위치에 내 블로그도 등록했다. 아~ 졸라 하루 날렸음~~

유튜브 자료 정리 했다. 쪼개져 있던 영상들을 주제별로 하나의 영상으로 만든 후 다시 올렸다. 덕분에 이전 영상들을 대부분 지워야만 했다. 인기 비됴 및 주석이 달렸던 비됴도 몇 개 지울 수 밖에 없었다. 95개였던 영상이 20여 개로 줄었다. 깔끔하고 가독성 높아졌다. 비디오에 포함된 음성 중 실제 음성에 문제가 있거나 잡음이 들어간 것은 오디오스왑 (AudioSwap) 기능을 이용해 다른 음악으로 엎어 침. 예전에는 무음 처리 했었다. 떱. 졸라 무식했었다. 마지막으로 회사 체육대회 비됴도 지웠다. 이놈의 저작권 땀시... 블로그랑 연결된 비됴 링크 다 바꿨다. 왕 노가다 끝~

대부분 각자의 취향에 따라 특정 업체의 이메일(주소)을 사용하고 있다. 주로 대형 포털이 제공하는 메일 서비스에 해당된다. 그러나, 여러 사정에 의해 메일(주소)을 옮기게 되면 메일 주소 자체가 계속 바뀌는 불편한 점이 있다. @ 뒤의 메일 호스트 주소가 계속 바뀌게 되어 지인들에게 새로운 주소를 알려주어야만 하는 번거로움이 있을 것이다.

하나의 대안은 자신의 보유 도메인 이용해 메일 서비스를 운영하는 것이다. 개인이 보유한 도메인은 독립 서버를 구성하지 않는 한 웹 호스팅 형태로 운영된다. 이 경우에는, 호스팅 업체를 바꾸더라도 메일 주소 자체는 변하지 않을 것이다. 그렇지만 호스팅 업체별로 메일 서비스를 제공하는 방식은 조금 다를 수 있다. 메일 주소가 바뀌지 않는다는 장점을 제외하고는 서비스의 품질이 호스팅 업체에 의존적이게 된다. POP 서비스 제공 여부라든가, 메일 용량, 보안, 스팸 처리 등에 대한 제약이 있을 수 있다. 대형 포털에 비해 안정성도 떨어질 수 있다.

Gmail은 구글이 제공하는 메일 서비스이다. 여러 기술적인 강점으로 인해 인기를 더해가고 있다. Gmail 역시 기본적으로는 xxx@gmail.com 이라는 메일 주소 형태를 가지게 된다. 그렇다면, 앞서 얘기한 포털과 호스팅의 단점을 극복하여 자기 도메인으로 구성된 메일 주소를 가지고 Gmail을 쓸 수 있을까?

결론은 "가능하다" 이다. 본인도 그렇게 사용하고 있고, 검색해 보니 이미 이곳에서도 간략히 소개 되었다. 현재 "Google 애플리케이션" 이라는 이름으로 서비스가 제공되고 있다. Google 애플리케이션이 제공하는 기능 일부를 통해 자기 도메인으로 구성된 메일 주소를 일반 Gmail과 똑 같이 사용할 수 있다. 쉽게 말해 Gmail 인터페이스와 똑같은 이메일 호스팅을 제공 받는 것이다. 메일 주소가 자신의 도메인으로 구성된다는 것 말고는 기존 Gmail과 동일하다.

자기 자신의 도메인이 있다면 지금 시도해 보시라! 진정한 평생 이메일 주소! ^_^

One frame presented upon my return from Ethiopia hung on a wall for a long time. The frame was made from coarse materials showing Ethiopian lady performing coffee ceremony in front of incense pottery. Long time eroded it day by day; several characters attached on it fell down already. The color of photo has faded with the passing of time. The value priced in money is very low. However, it's unmovable evidence that I had been to Ethiopia and I got invaluable experience from there. Today, I made up my mind to put it in a safe place to protect it from damage.

I could realize that too many souvenirs took much space at home. They were from largely Japan, Ethiopia, USA, and other places I visited or friends did. Re-arranging them into appropriate slots took nearly all day. I could recollect beautiful memory linking a souvenir and whoever gave it to me. Fullest smile stayed with me all through the arrangement. What a virtue of travel and staying overseas!

A certain article may get more attention in case of photo attachment on it. One of strategies to accomplish the goal on a blog environment would be parallel placement of respective two tags having the same tag name; one will direct you to blog article tagged by it, the other will lead you to photo archive tagged by it, too. The former is defaulted behavior of Movable Type; the latter is also basic facility, however, separately provided by Flickr service. Today, I could generate a glue containing flickr tags matched with blog tags. Finally, I could attach the interface at the foot of every blog posts as shown from this article with the help of Movable Type template feature. Layout may change without any notification later on, though :-) No matched photo tags are marked by strikes.

Self Made Flickr Tag Clouds for Movable Type

An API to Flickr brought "Movable Type"-like photo tag clouds to this web site. Shown in the entrance and a screen shot below (I may change the entrance some day; that's why), tags linked with hyperlinks (Flickr photo show in my case) are listed in the order of popularity (instances) also represented by font sizes. To host this "Flickr tag clouds," I prepared REST wrapper script in perl as an atomic function. Then, hundred lines of additional codes made it possible for me to collect as much information from Flickr server. The "Flickr tag clouds" updates tag information dynamically in accordance with changes from the server with the help of cron job scheduler. More technical details MAY appear soon.

Forging all available measures to utilize Movable Type to the fullest extent

Over the last three years, I aimed at putting as many articles on this blog, then improving quality of articles as information hive. Good accessibility to this blog to pick a certain post was beyond my scope. One day, I recognized that even I can not easily access my old archives only with several clicks.

The core problem was that blog links shown from a browser could not cover all paths to a specific post. Search function may take the place. However, one should enter a search term. This way is not feasible in case of visitor's first look-up or peeking purpose. For example, I had no way to pick an article without search function because pre-defined templates just showed several recent entries; defaulted behavior. Changing attributes to show more or all entries made blog plane occupied by too long list.

Movable Type experience in blog design: art and power of flexibility from templates, widgets, and styles

Beginning with simple line drop on this blog dated April 19, 2005, I put more than hundred posts so far. The first and last (I wonder, though) blog platform, Movable Type always stayed with me since then.

]]> The quality of blog contents or contents itself must be a source of spirit in daily blogging. On other hands, supporting techniques will polish the spirit effectively if they provide appropriate tools rendering whatever bloggers want to visualize on the Web. The Movable Type, called publishing platform, converts merely textual contents to prospective shining gems with its underlying techniques as well as with bidirectional data flow across most resources on the Web.

All blog platforms including Movable Type would conform to web standards in their respective resulting contents. Differences against one another comes from the ways how they control user contents from input to output, facilities they provide for users doing so, and design scheme users work on. Templates, widgets, and styles are what Movable Type can show regarding those differences.

1. Templates are logical frameworks where user entries enter directly and indirectly. There is no need to care about physical structure. Putting what one wants to put is enough! Template contents may be frequently used codes/strings, just logical layout (for example, article title will be followed by contents, then comments, blah, blah), and whatever commonly used excerpts.

2. Widgets are building blocks helping users place contents (including entry) here and there over a blog plane. User can group contents from various sources of user defined templates, existing Movable Type templates, and direct input. User can construct widgets independent from those sources. Once widgets are ready for use, users can drag and drop to place them wherever preferred. That is, only mouse movements are required.

3. Styles are facilities to generate browser ready outcome from user entry incorporated with templates and widgets. HTML/CSS aware definition will make your entry look more beautiful and understandable from the Web. Style modification may need patience to test outcomes with trial and error repetition, a sort of intensive manual labor. However, concentration on style design is the only time consuming and hard work because templates and widgets will relieve bloggers of chores.

More technical details with examples will soon appear showing how those three will enhance flexible blog publishing. Of course, there are many more features available apart from above mentioned

Uploaded by jangmimadokoro, these two videos show how atmosphere of local language instruction prepared by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is. The class is for called Korea Overseas Volunteers (KOV) passed intensive screening in language and specialization.

Once admitted as KOV, they will take orientation trainings including local language learning course as if they stay in University environment. Instructors invited come from various fields of expertise. Local language instructors are, in most cases, from respective countries to which KOICA dispatches KOVs. Language of local language instruction is English. :-(

한국국제협력단 파견 한국해외봉사단은 출국 직전에 국내에서 현지어 교육을 받는다. 파견돼 현지에서 교육을 받은 기수도 있었으나, 지금은 대부분 국내 교육인 것 같다. 아래 동영상은 필리핀 현지어 교육에 참여한 봉사단원의 모습을 보인다. 구글/유튜브 에서 우연히 찾았다. 현지어 교육을 포함해 출국 전 교육이 실시되는 유네스코 훈련원 시설도 일부 보인다. 아 옛날이여! 9년 전 그 때 그 곳에서 나는 에티오피아어를 영어로 배우고 있었다. :-)

Done it! MT 4.2, as committed, did not impose any chores on me. Complete as well as perfect automated process made me stay away from detailed installation. Now, Movable Type 4.2 is with me only after a whole day endeavor to migrate my own styles and templates (inevitably and intrinsically manual labor by blog owner)

Attractive publishing perforamce is a great plus. Wrist watch read more than three minutes upon the last build on MT 4.1 right before the migration. MT 4.2, on the other hand, gives out around one minute or so in seconds from publishing result window.

Action Streams migration into Movable Type 4.2

Recent hot release of movable type 4.2 caught me into trouble while pushing action streams from 4.1 installation into this nice platform, movable type pro 4.2. Upgrade guide just showed how to upgrade MT itself; this post is how to fit action streams from old installation (MT 4.1+Action Streams 1.0) in connection with MT 4.2 upgrade.]]> 1. MT 4.2 upgrade

Complete MT upgrade as guided with fresh installation. (This post may not apply to the case copying files over old installation) Upon upgrade completion, nothing on action stream (AS) will be available on profile menu as shown below. That is, next step will be to install fresh actions stream plugin under MT 4.2. For your reference not to go astray while AS migration, DO NOT DELETE TemplateRefresh and WidgetManager as instructed in step 2 of Movable Type 4.2 Upgrade Guide.

2. Action Stream Installation

Install AS plugin as you did before. Log onto MT again and check your profile data revived.

If you click [Action Stream] menu, you will get an error message as below. The goal is to clear out this problem.

3. Action Stream Upgrade

Move to plugin menu! [WidgetManager] plugin stays disabled. Enable it! You may recognize that you saved this plugin in step 1 of this guide.

You will be kicked out, then ready to upgrade AS table. Begin and confirm!

4. Refreshing Action Stream Events

There is no error on clicking [Action Stream] menu. You can browse old events triggered before without detailed descriptions.

You can run "perl tools/run-periodic-tasks" on MT installation directory to force refresh. Or just leave them for cron scheduler to refresh in the future. Now, all done! Enjoy MT 4.2 with AS!

Endeavor to control columns layout in this blog made it possible for me to transit from three columns environment then to land in flexible (four or more columns) publishing platform. Old one shown below accommodated so big sized picture at the portal that there was no enough room to populate and rearrange additional widgets.

The renovated home page now has four columns to try its best to give you core and summarized information available from this blog. You can confirm that additional style sheet and layout code in HTML work well on both of Windows and UNIX box with FireFox as shown below while there may be redundancy in code pieces :)

Scalable multiple columns design for Universal Web Templates in Movable Type Professional Pack

Whenever a change of column layout was in need, I directly modified side bar template with three or two columns layout unchanged. Furthermore, widths for respective columns were out of my control. While tracking templates and style sheet, I came up with a clue how to customize column layout then poured a couple of hours to make my blog seen as it is now aiming at expanding the number of columns of entrance page from three to four (or more ideally). Followings are what I did to achieve the goal. Correct me please if there is something wrong. Any comment or suggestion for improvement will be appreciated, too. (I am not a MT guru)

1. Adding new style sheet for override

A screen capture below shows you how I overrode existing style by adding my own at the bottom of main style sheet. After that, I created the customized style sheet, named mystyle.css, from Blog templates (index templates) section of MT administration menu. You may modify or put my copy (mystyle.txt) into your preferred location.

2. Defining columns layout and scheme on that new style sheet

Adding delta-inner and epsilon-inner (experimental and future expansion purpose only) will be enough because existing MT style sheets have sections of alpha-inner, beta-inner, and gamma-inner. Inspection said that the summed length of each columns were 940px in maximum for proper tabulation. You may put your own width as long as the entire length does not exceed that size. Putting a certain name for this column structure is everything to do. For this blog, I named it with myhome. Look up excerpts (mystyle.txt) commented by "MY HOME" and around.

3. Changing sidebar by slight modification

Modifying sidebar template can be inevitable; it will be preferable minimizing the change and/or making it independent from system wide template/style change. This is link is for sidebar template. I've just added "else" conditions to put my own control below it. Look up excerpts commented by "below added by hyok"(sidebar.txt) or around. One thing kept in mind is that a division "delta" MUST be newly and entirely added as suggested.

4. Applying new layout

As shown below, I changed "page_layout" value into "layout-myhome" made from above in main index template section. That's all.

You may need to revisit step two and three to approach an optimal point in column width and widget placement.

Something requires, in most cases, enough time to make it what we expect to see or satisfy oneself with it.

One shot taken today brought above example home to me showing astonishing difference in growth of her (fish) fins against old shot taken from the same object. I often would not stand long time to get a certain result from my actions or measures. When it comes to fish care, I used to administer medication and first aid with hot temper by applying much amount dosage and/or doing it by short intervals repeatedly. The outcome was largely disastrous. All dead within short time :(

Angel fish shown above had suffered so called fungus disease upon the first dive into my water tank. Then, I strictly obeyed instructions from pet shop; Sodium shower, medication to the point, temperature control, relatively higher aeration, and so on. While repeating the cycle, I did not measure the progress whether there is improvement in her health intentionally. I just awaited a result calming myself down. After a couple of months, the result turned out to be a success as you can enjoy beautiful fins. (You can peek what the fins looked like before from here)

Patience can make everything come true. Something on my both hands now, hopefully, may come true by the same lesson learned with my fish. :)

Life is, I think, the trace of facing something bad, good, wrong, or whatever in series or parallel day by day. Today, my fault made something spoiled in vain. I could expect difficulties in accomplishing it, however, never imagined the failure I faced in the morning. Pretending as if I were calm all through today, I revisited the point where critical fault in decision making happened one month ago. I came to admit my fault logically for sure. As clear as glass!

To be fair, I've got a message from a Japanese friend, saying that he was on business in Seoul, after a long interval since the last meeting a year ago. He is about to return back to Japan tomorrow. I just dropped reply with all my heart because I had an appointment tonight. Then, I've got a call from a friend, high school alumni, saying good news that he attained a supply contract with one of major information service providers in Korea. It was in six months that I received a call from him!

One bad thing and two pieces of good news balanced one another. This is life :)

Ethiopian Flavor

Korean usually complains the decrease of appetite from excessive sodium loss by sweat and after exhaustion of physical power in struggle against hot weather during summer season. Simple solution to revive appetite is to visit restaurants serving spicy and/or cool food. Enjoying home made recipe like "seaweed and vinegar over cold water" will be another way.

In search for memory how I sustained during dry season in Addis Ababa (not so hot as you imagine, though; refer to this link), I could enumerate what I usually chose for lunch and dinner to stimulate appetite. Then I revisited Ethiopian cuisine pages from Wikipedia and my bookmarks reminding me of real shape, color, odor, and taste. However, I can't prepare Ethiopian style dinner table at home now because several core ingredients are not available in Korea.

We call this situation, "A pancake in a picture" :-) The photo below is to show you how much I enjoyed Ethiopian food.

모바일 웹 페이지에 Google Analytics(이하 GA) 코드를 그냥 달아도 상관은 없겠지만, ready.mobi에서 호환성 시험을 해보면 java 코드로 인해 호환성 점수가 떨어지는 문제가 있다. 호환되지 않아 일부 휴대기기에서 오동작 가능성이 있다는 뜻이다. 구글을 찾아보니 GA 코드를 호환되는 PHP로 바꾸어 놓은 싸이트가 있었다. 그대로 복사하고 몇 가지 변수를 바꾸어 며칠 동작 시험을 해본 결과 완벽히 동작함. 여기 참고.

site.mobi의 mobiSiteGalore를 사용하였다. http://kokeb.net/m를 (또는 http://kokeb.mobi)작성하는 과정에서 보여진 화면을 갈무리 하였다. mobiSiteGalore를 사용하는 다른 곳에서도 아래의 설명은 유효하다. 사용법이 너무나도 쉽기 때문에 자세한 설명을 생략하고 중요한 특징만을 정리한다. (아래 순서는 개인적으로 유용하다고 생각되는 순서임 ^_^)

홈피 내용을, 정확하게는 RSS feed를, 휴대용 장치에서 볼 수 있게 하려고 오래 전에 작은 페이지를 하나 만들었다. Feed에는 블로그 글, 사진, 동영상, 한글 북마크, 영문 북마크 등을 포함 시켰다. 잘 보이는 지를 확인하기 위해 ready.mobi에 가서 테스팅했다. 모바일 규약에 맞지 않는 html 태그라든가, 잘못 사용된 속성, 추천하는 해결 방식 등을 확인할 수 있다. 변경이 생길 때마다 앞서의 삽질을 반복하던 차에 모바일 페이지를 생성해 주는 사이트를 찾았다. 이름은 mobiSiteGalore! 이전의 삽질이 허무해짐과 동시에 안구에 습기가! @_@

mobiSiteGalore는 기본적으로 모바일 페이지 작성기 이기 때문에 .mobi 도메인 소유 여부, 호스팅 운영 여부 등에 관계 없이, 사용자 등록과 동시에 페이지를 작성할 수 있다. 호스팅과 도메인에 관한 사항은 천천히 고민해도 된다. 아니면 사이트 내에서 제공하는 호스팅 또는 임시 도메인을 사용할 수도 있다. 이미 도메인을 보유하고 호스팅을 운영하고 있다면 작성한 페이지를 자신의 사이트로 쉽게 올릴 수 있다. FTP 계정이 열려 있는 호스팅 이라면 올리는 과정 역시 자동화 할 수 있다. 이 때 도메인 역시 .mobi 일 필요는 없다. 일단 현재의 도메인으로 올리고 나중에 .mobi와 연결해주면 된다.

Volunteering Somewhere!

As we, all the ex-KOVs, had rendered private volunteering in addition to designated duties upon bilateral agreement between Korean Government and respective countries, successors are doing the same with the spirit of "cooperation for a better world" in grass root level. Today, I could locate one article visualizing the virtue of helping the needy in Rwanda.

Visiting a certain project site or organization in person, we were not visitors anymore but family members or relatives for its residents as if we have known one another since our birth. Mutual joy from such a visit would come from washing, cooking, playing, sharing, feeling, and doing whatever all together!

It's nearly a decade ago that I used to commute from and to the Ministry during work days and would visit NGO sites for weekend. There was neither intention nor consideration as long as we were volunteers. We had just done it.

A UFO in Gunpo

One newspaper featured that a UFO emerged at Suri Mountain, Gunpo over the sky. One UFO chaser captured its swift movement together with flashlight by called John Bro technique. The article added comment that Gunpo is one of famous spots where UFOs were videotaped relatively many times in Korea. Can I snatch another someday in the middle of trekking to Suri Mountain? :) Hm...

펑거병 치료기 (혈앵무)

(올바른 국어 사용을 위해 맞춤법/문법 검사기를 사용했습니다.)

어항 내 魚적 청산 후, 혈앵무와 레드쥬얼 (씨클리드 일종) 각 한 마리로 새 출발 했다. 물 잡고 입수한 후 이틀 만에 펑거병 발병하여 혈앵무의 지느러미가 썩는 것이 확인됨. 이런 된장! 하나에 만원 주고 산 물고기가!

물 생활 5년차에 세 번째 겪는 펑거병. 처음에는 어리바리 아무것도 몰라서 어항 전역을 초토화 시켰다. 두 번째는 수족관 사장님 조언을 바탕으로 치료 시도하였으나 실패! 다행히 초토화되지는 않아 생존 魚를 중심으로 새 출발. 삼세번이라고 이번에는 성공한 것으로 보임.

펑거병 걸리면 물고기가 황천길 가는 것은 시간문제. 그냥 느낌이지만 지느러미가 썩어들어가는 속도는 상상을 초월해서 하루 정도만 내버려둬도 지느러미의 반이 날아간다. 상황과 환경에 따라 다르겠지만, 대부분 펑거가 출몰하면 치료를 포기하는 분위기이다. 이번 성공 결과에 비추어 최대한 잽싸게 조치를 취하는 것이 핵심인 것 같다.

소금과 치료약을 쓰는 일반적으로 알려진 방법을 사용했다. 펑거 발생 물고기를 격리하지 않은 채 어항 그대로 치료를 했다. 이전과 같은 실수를 반복하지 않으려고. 합사된 물고기가 소금이나 약품 때문인 치명적 영향이 없다면 있는 그대로 치료하는 것이 맞는 것 같다. 괜히 소금물/약품 목욕한답시고 이리저리 옮겨 스트레스 주는 것이 오히려 치유를 방해하는 것 같다. 대신 물갈이를 매일 하고 정량 준수해서 소금물, 약품 풀어주고... 무려 나흘을 꼬박! 집에 있는 양동이, 히터, 공기펌프 총동원됨 @_@

현재의 경과는 좋은 편이다. 지느러미 썩는 현상이 멈춘 후에 치료를 중단하고 매일 상태를 점검하고 있다. 지느러미가 새로 돋아나는 것이 관찰되나 썩어들어간 속도에 비하면 새 발의 피! 어디서 읽으니 완전 재생에는 한 달 정도가 걸린다고 함. 아래 사진에서 보는 것과 같이 원형 대비 소실된 지느러미의 면적을 생각하면 그럴 법도 하다. 꼭 클릭해 보세요! 여러분도 펑거병 조심하고 즐물!

어항 사진 찍기 (혈앵무, 씨클리드)

어항 사진 찍기 기술 실습 차원에서 오늘 작정을 하고 사진을 찍었다. 256메가 "memory full"이 될 때까지 찍어댄 후 확인해 봤다. 두어 장 정도 쓸 만했다. 다시 한번 "memory full"이 될 때까지 찍었다. 최종적으로 4장 나왔다. 그중에서 잘된 것 두 장을 여기 올린다. 나머지 두 장은 여기에.

사진기 조작은 제대로 해 왔었는데 어항 사진 찍기라는 글과 비교해 이전에 소홀했던 부분은 조명이었다. 어항 표면에 반사 안 생기게 거실 조명 조정하고 어항 안에 빛이 충분히 들어가도록 원래 있던 조그만 형광등에 더해 탁상용 전등까지 동원했다. 마지막으로 어항 표면을 광이 나도록 휴지로 닦음. 네 개 면을 무반사로 만드는 데는 실패했지만, 한 면은 완벽하게 무반사로 만들었다. 많은 노력에도 좋은 사진은 반사 면에서 나왔지만. ㅋㅋ

A hell of English learning

English, one of the world official languages, makes entire private educational sector in Korea anomalous in its form and way of instruction. Vague uncertainties from parents as well as strategic boost by spreading such an uncertainty from cram schools guarantee high profit in their business and dramatic growth in market size. Initially, English cram schools business was just for complementary purpose against public English classes at middle school or high school. As of today, cram school attendants range from pre-school child to university students. There are also specially designed courses aiming at high scores toward TOEFL, TOEIC, or other English tests. It's not strange any more that elementary school students attend TOEFL courses after school.

One day, I could encounter one extreme form of English learning in Korea; learning Taekwondo in English as shown below! I wonder that this form of instruction makes sense in Taekwondo or English learning standpoint. This country is a hell of English learning. :(

Expectations for 2008 (ICCF-Holland)

"91 children are being sponsored in January 2008. That is six more than last year. This number is stable over the past years: some sponsors start, some drop out. The monthly income is about 1300 euro. Additionally there are quite a few sponsors that pay yearly. Hopefully we will be able to keep the income from sponsors at the same level in 2008. The income from the one-time donations is, considering the incidental nature, hard to predict. Nevertheless, we have seen a steady increase, mostly because new sources of income were found. We cannot predict if this will happen again the coming year."

Above is an excerpt from 2007 financial report of ICCF-Holland showing expectations for year 2008. I added a penny over the last two years (or more) in support of the projects in Uganda and their sustainability. The report marked slight revenue increase in year 2007 from VIM sponsoring and me. :) I could confirm that the project aimed at very low costs and had done it.

Movable Type의 Action Streams과 유사하게 (엄밀하게는, 쌍을 이루는 형식으로)동작하도록 설계된 서비스이다. Social networking과 블로그를 포함한 사용자 서비스 사이에서 양방향 통신을 가능하게 해준다. 일단 현재 사용중인 블로그와 facebook을 연결했고 facebook 상에서 글을 올리고 있다. 결과가 어떻게 나올지... 자세한 사항은 여기 참조.

아래 그림 처럼 facebook 상에서 글을 입력하면 자신의 블로그에 글이 올려집니다. 유사한 사례는 여기를 참조 하시면 됩니다. 아직은 facebook에서 MT로 글 올리기만 가능한 상태이고, Action Streams는 지원하지 않는 것으로 보입니다.

The survived

This is an obituary of my beloved fishes to whoever loved them at personal visit to my home and from photo shots in flickr archive. Now, I have ONLY THREE black tetras. They sheltered in a small water tank after an emergency rescue from where they lived long ago. Others passed away. :(

Recently, I recognized that several fishes went inviable in their motion to catch preys and feeds. Dripping several shots of antibacterial liquid was everything that I had done because it had worked well on the same symptom before. One morning after a couple of days, corpses were floating beneath water surface. I came up with the fact that I had forgotten to wash the tank and fill fresh water so long time.

It was absolutely my fault not to clean the tank while most of the deceased had lived longer than their known longevity of three years. On the other hand, there is no doubt that the survived also pass away within one year or so regardless of my sincere care. However, the only and very thing that I have to do is still to deliver utmost affection for them.

Flavor from Singapore

Without terribly hot weather, I could live in Singapore! It overcame hardship during colonial and now shows diversity in culture toward prosperous future.

The city, small but full of amusements, attracts people and me from overseas. Facilities as well as amenities were available for tourists and citizens under proper management. Three days exploration could not cover all the spots open to me. However, it was clear from my first impression that why most people want to stay there for vacation or permanent residence.

The best attractive point for me was relatively cheap food price. Foods were made from fresh materials. The kinds of food with Asian countries' delicacy gave me a joy to be lined up in front of local restaurants every meal hours. I was in search for spicy flavor all through stay there. Tropical fruits galore were another temptation!

More surprising thing than I expected was that diversified ethnic groups flourish their own cultures with sincere respect to one another. This sustaining factor seemed to form what the Singapore is and what it has now. Nobody out of whomever I met in the middle of this travel expressed discrimination or showed inhospitality.

Hopefully, next travel destination will be Singapore again because visiting spots this time were very limited to downtown area and Sentosa Island due to short schedule. Enjoy photos and videos from below!

아무 생각 없이 떠나다! 싱가포르

자유여행 패키지를 알아보니 대부분 4박 5일 또는 5박 6일 일정이 대부분이었다. 자세히 살펴보니 늦게 출발해서 일찍 돌아오는 일정이라 시간 낭비가 심했다. 패키지보다 현저히 비쌌지만, 시간 절약을 위해 아침에 출발해서 밤늦게 도착하는 비행 편을 택해 2박 3일 일정으로 다녀왔다. (정확히는 3일 째 23:50분에 현지를 출발해 한국에는 4일째 새벽에 도착하는 일정) 호텔은 agoda.com에서 예약 했다. 호텔 검색뿐만 아니라 실시간 채팅 응대도 가능해서 검색 두 시간 만에 호텔 예약을 했다. 일정, 항공편, 숙박을 이렇게 정하고 가방 둘러메고 떠났다. 현지에 있는 친구 믿고.

나라가 작다 보니 어찌 보면 2박 3일도 여유 있어 보였지만, 여기저기 돌아다니다 보니 나름대로 힘든 일정이었다.

첫날: 오후에 도착해 호텔 투숙, Tanjong Paga 돌아다니기
둘째 날: 오전에 센토사, 오후에 China Town, Orchard 돌아다니기
셋째 날: 오전에 Marina Bay, 오후에 Bugis, 저녁식사는 시청 근처

첫날: 사전 준비 전혀 없이 떠난 여행이라 정말 아무 생각 없이 창이 공항에 내렸다. 공항 직원을 통해 전철 노선도, 싱가포르 지도, 기타 관광 정보 대충 챙겨 물어물어 전철을 탔다. 영어 단어 몇 개만 알면 표 끊는 데 전혀 문제없다. 매표 기계 사용법 2~3분만 배우고 노선도 하나 있으면 끝. 전철 갈아타는 일은 한국 보다 열 배는 쉬웠다. 이후 모든 이동은 전철로만 했다. 호텔 체크인하고 Tanjong Paga 지역 돌아다녔다. 저녁은 근처에 있는 현지식당에서 했다. 먹을거리 장터 형식으로 된 식당들이 많이 있어 이날뿐만 아니라 일정 내내 이런 형식의 식당을 이용했다. 중국식, 인도네시아식, 일본식, 파키스탄식 음식 등 아시아 쪽의 거의 모든 음식을 맛볼 수 있다. 대략 3 S$ 정도를 기본으로 해서 8S$ 정도이면 떡을 칠 정도였다. 다만, 냉방이 되지 않는 거의 노천 상태 구조이기 때문에 매운 음식을 먹을 때 더위를 두 배로 먹을 수 있다.

둘째 날: 더위 적응을 어느 정도 하고 센토사 섬을 구경했다. 휴양지로 개발된 곳인데 한국의 에버랜드, 롯데월드, 서울랜드를 상상하면 오산이다. 규모뿐만 아니라 내용 면에서도 앞서 말한 곳을 따라가지는 못한다. 안에 있는 수족관은 안습. 이국적인 해변, 섬을 오가는 케이블카, 섬에서 바라본 싱가포르 경치 정도가 다였다. 더위를 피해 케이블카 탑승장 근처의 쇼핑몰 내에서 점심을 먹었다. 실내에 있는 식당 대부분은 10S$내외로 먹을 수 있는 곳이다. 오후에는 차이나 타운 구경했다. 여기는 한국의 용산, 남대문시장 분위기. Chinatown Heritage Centre도 둘러보고 Orchard로 이동했다. 여기는 압구정동 갤러리아 백화점 및 주변 분위기. 저녁은 Orchard에 있는 Food Republic이라는 곳에서 했다. 여기는 냉방 되는 실내형 ^_^ 먹을거리 장터였는데 양질의 음식을 한국보다 저렴하게 먹을 수 있었다. Orchard 돌아다니며 소화시키고 일정 마무리.

셋째 날: Merlion을 봐야 한다기에 근처의 시내를 포함해 구경했다. 주위에는 영국이 지어 사용했던 영국풍 옛 관공서 건물과 다리들이 있고, 두리안 모양의 극장 (Esplanade Theatre), 기타 묘하게 생긴 건물들이 모여 있었다. Marina square 근처 구경하고 Bugis로 이동해 점심. 여기는 동대문 두타 분위기. 재래시장과 쇼핑몰이 공존하고 있었다. 노상에서 1S$ 짜리 코코넛 주스, 두리안 주스 사서 배 터지도록 마셨다. 쇼핑하느라 시간 보내고 시청 근처에서 저녁 먹고 공항으로 향함

전반적 느낌

이 번에는 주요 중심가와 센토사를 중심으로 여행했는데, 다음 기회에는 동부와 서부에 있는 지점들을 둘러볼까 한다. 회사에서 출장을 여기로 보내 준다면 더더욱 좋을 것 같고. ㅋㅋ

각 국의 음식과 과일, 차분한 도시 분위기(쇼핑센터 부근 제외), 다양한 인종이 조화롭게 살아가는 환경 등 때문에 다시 가고 싶은 생각이 든다. 특이한 발음의 각종 영어 (인도식, 말레이식, 싱가포르식, 중국식), 몸이 삶아지는 듯한 더위만 아니라면. 대체로 한국이나 일본처럼 복작거리고 산다는 느낌이 들지 않았다. 싱가포르 선험자 들이 손꼽는 쇼핑의 매력을 느낄 수는 있었지만, 그것이 싱가포르의 본질은 아닌 것 같다.

여행 준비를 위한 참고 사항

동/서부의 주요 지역을 제외하면 나머지 지역은 중/남부에 몰려 있다. 너무나도 많은 지역 이름이 나와서 준비 당시 혼란스러웠는데, 가서 보니 다 거기서 거기였다. 중심부의 전철역 간 거리는 그리 멀지 않아 한군데 내리면 걸어서 주위 블록을 둘러볼 수 있다. 강남역 내려서 역삼동 둘러보고 전철 타고 삼성역 둘러볼 수 있는 식이다. 싱가포르 국토 면적을 고려하여 위키매피아 등을 통해 보면 쉽게 알 수 있다. 여기에 구체적으로 나타내지는 않았지만, 사흘 동안 중심부의 거의 모든 지역을 둘러보았다.

Finally, my movable type archive and supporting scripts moved to the US for hosting services in Korea did not meet full requirements in some functionalities to enable movable type itself as well as plug-ins that go with movable type 4.1 now and, probably, with future versions. My installation staying in Korea over the last three years moved around one hosting service to the others upon seasonal updates and upgrades whenever available. Supports for movable type users were extremely limited or out of consideration for hosting service business in most cases.

This is largely due to low popularity of movable type in Korea. On the other hand, it's because movable type runs on perl environment that should be platform independent but would be extra module dependent in effect. Core problem came from the fact that most hosting providers would not want themselves to install those extra modules for fear of making their system unstable or going malfunction.

I just gave up negotiating with service providers in Korea to claim to increase quality of service in technical standpoint for movable type. Now, SA certified hosting provider in the US where I am delivers high quality of service to meet system requirement of movable type in perfect. Swift response like flashlight is a plus why I migrated from Korea even at the cost of network response lagging over the Pacific Ocean.

무버블타입(이하 MT)을 이용해 설치형 블로그 운영시 호스팅 업체 선정과 관련한 경험을 정리해 보겠습니다. 제가 업그레이드를 자주 해서 서버가 새 버전의 기능을 따라가지 못한 점도 있겠지만, 호스팅 업체의 사정을 감안해도 너무 하다는 생각이 든 경우가 자주 있었습니다. 기술적으로나 서버 관리차원에서 사소한 문제에 대해 (일부는 중요하기는 합니다만) 세심한 지원이 아쉬웠습니다.

현재 최신 버전인 4.1과 UNIX 환경을 기준으로 설명합니다. 이전 버전에서 업그레이드 예정인 경우에도 일부 참고가 될 것입니다. 또한 MT 또는 유명 플러그인의 부가 기능 모두를 활용할 경우를 가정하겠습니다. 단순히 글을 올리고 관리하는 주요 기능만을 사용하는 경우에는 적용되지 않을 수 있습니다.

perl 모듈 지원: 객관적으로 기준을 정하기는 모호하지만, 대형 업체의 고가 호스팅일 경우 안정성과 보안상의 이유로 모듈 추가 설치를 거부하는 경우가 있었습니다. 사용 중 계약을 해지하고 업체를 변경할 수 밖에 없었습니다. 오히려 저가 호스팅의 경우 모듈 추가나 변경을 잘 해주는 편이었습니다. 그러나 추가/변경 요청이 잦아지자, 결국 대형 업체와 같은 논리로 모듈 설치를 거부하였습니다. 최소한 Image::Magick이 (스팸 방지에 필수적인 모듈) 설치되어 있는지, 또는 추가 설치 가능한지 사전에 확인해야 합니다. ActionStreams를 사용 하려면 XML::Parser이 설치되어 있는지도 확인 하셔야 합니다.
Cron: 운영에 별 지장은 없지만, 있으면 편리합니다. 서버 부하 가중을 우려해 대부분의 업체가 제공하지 않습니다. 참고로만 확인하시면 됩니다.
Sendmail/smtp: 호스트 내에서 메일 발송이 가능한지 여부입니다. 보통은 웹메일을 제공하면서 stmp 서버를 별도로 운영하기 때문에 MT가 설치된 호스트 내에서는 sendmail/smtp 실행 권한이 없는 경우가 대부분 입니다. 이것도 참고로만 확인하시면 됩니다.
기타: 상기 사항이 MT를 설치하게 될 호스트 내에 준비 되어 있는지 확인하셔야 합니다. 업체 차원에서 MT를 지원한다고 하는 경우에도, 운이 없으면 자신의 MT가 설치될 호스트에는 준비가 안 되어 있는 황당한 경우도 있습니다.

Paying a visit to 70th anniversary of one of relatives made me recollect when I departed for Ethiopia at Gimpo International Airport in 1999 immediately after local orientation training as a Korea Overseas Volunteer. That's because the party venue was one of restaurants at the international passenger terminal complex of that airport.

The return flight in the year of 2001 from Bole International Airport was headed for Incheon International Airport, newly constructed for high flight control capacity and with tidy premises. Gimpo International Airport, thereafter, played a role as port of only Gimpo-Haneda route or other special flights as an international airport. In the meanwhile, my itineraries for overseas trips were mostly limited to Incheon-somewhere so far.

Anyway, it elapsed nearly ten years since the departure for Ethiopia. I could again feel the inspiration that I felt as a volunteer when I repeated to look back Mother and relatives on faces shedding in front of passport check desk at THAT departure gate on the photo. Time is flying, huh?

My toy camera, Digital IXY 400, is under repair to replace memory interface module recalled by Canon. It was always with me not to miss something interesting wherever I go. An engineer in customer support center confirmed that it would take more than five working days from my application to pick-up. Camera module inside mobile phone will play a role in grabbing what I look at. I am afraid that photo quality will not meet my expectation, though.

One popular rally point, hangang, pulled so many visitors including me. Scenery along the river and dynamic of strollers confirmed that spring already positioned in our consciousness.

Anniversary, dol

Upon the invitation from one of my best friends, I attended the first birthday party of his niece. It is the biggest anniversary for kids in Korea. Low survival rate of a baby in ancient times formulated it as a special event, called "dol" Family members as well as relatives would get together to celebrate it if they did not get a bad news from his or her parents. Thanks to high quality medical service now, nobody will worry about the health of infants in most cases. However, the culture of dol lasts up to now. My parents must have hosted my dol party in 1975, too! :)

The party itself is for her (one year old baby). Joy from the party will be taken by the attended, though. Photos taken long before then shown in front of entrance made us smile by reviewing her life story over the last one year. Her toddling with smile attracted attention from everybody touched by innocence. In my point, I could enjoy nice dishes, drinks, music, and beautiful atmosphere colored in pink everywhere. Anyway, it was one of the greatest parties ever attended recently.

A blog renovation completed just ago. Purchase of professional pack, thought of as one of idiot action by blogging gurus, boosted it accordingly. A combination of the adaptation to MT4.1, brand new features from professional pack, and cutting edge plug-ins available only from MT4.1 made me confused to set up a blog sphere keeping the entry link consistency with new features at my hand. However, the fact that I paid for commercial software for the first time in my life gave me more inspiration to maximize its functionality. Big changes include,

As an illiterate in contemporary arts as well as general arts, I could hardly understand what the monument, standing on a certain point of Hakuicheon bank, would represent or try to show us. Several scripts from the photo below fed good input in an exploration over Internet. A couple of hours effort generated reasonable output showing what/who the M/M (Paris) is/are. I could pick a lot of photo shots from flickr tagged by mmparis.

However, an unseen message from the tower led me to another search. Web pages from Anyang Public Art Project (APAP) made it possible for me to clarify something laid far beyond my imagination. An online brochure was a direct answer sheet against everything in question; what the individual building block would stand for and what the tower group would represent. Clicking the photo below will show you a big sized shot. After that, you can figure out the organization of respective columns by matching a symbol with an English alphabet shown in the brochure. 현대 예술을 포함한 거의 모든 예술에 문외한인 내가, 학의천변에서 찍은 조형물의 해석에 애로가 있어 아래 사진에 나온 문구를 가지고 두 시간여 검색을 한 결과 만족할 만한 결과를 얻었다. 일단, M/M (Paris)가 무엇인지를 이해할 수 있었다. 유명한 것 같다. 그들의 활동과 작품들도 flickr에서 사진과 그림을 통해 살펴볼 수 있었다.

그러나 학의천에서 찍은 조형물은 도무지 감이 오지 않아 다시 한번 검색을 했다. [제 2회 안양 공공예술 프로젝트 2007]이 답이었다. 작품 자료집에 있는 해설을 보고 나서 높이가 서로 다른 기둥에 그려진 그림의 의미를 알 수 있었다. 그림 해설의 영문자를 아래 사진에 맞춰 보면 된다. (사진을 클릭하면 크게 확대 되어 보임) 답은 사진 아래 문장의 각 단어를 하나의 기둥으로 만들어 세운 것이라는 것! 이해가 안 되면 메일 주삼. 아~, 문화 생활 좀 하고 살아야겠다. 작품 하나 이해 하기가 이렇게 힘드니 원... ^_^

Graduation

The sentence, [Graduation marks new start], was still thought of as a cliché all through my commencement ceremonies that I had attended five times from elementary school to post graduate study. That cliché touched my heart a little with a certain feeling that I could not feel before upon nephew's elementary school commencement recently.

The ceremony venue was full of teachers, parents, students, and their relatives with loudness as is often the case in ordinary schools. The principal delivered address saying good wishes by enumerating words; new, start, hope, preparation, challenge, and so on. The words just passed by my ears, then. His emphasis on those words by repetition did not give me a strong impression.

During lunch hour after the ceremony, my nephew expressed curiosity toward new environment of middle school. Everybody gathered there cheered him up not to loose self-confidence. The context must be the same even when I graduated from an elementary school. I can not recollect how my graduation was, though.

I came to understand the metaphor of [new start from graduation] at last just from half day attendance as not a student but a guest. However, I don't have a word [graduation] in my dictionary any more at least now and in the future. If so, what else would let me start another era in life?

Movable Type (MT) 4.1을 웹호스팅 상에서 직접 설치해 운영하는 경우, Flickr의 사진을 MT의 특정 블로그 asset으로 활용하는 방법입니다. 블로그 dashboard 상의 Upload File 기능을 이용하면 개별 자료가 블로그의 asset으로 등록 되며 서버 상에 등록/저장 되는데 Flickr, YouTube, Amazon 같은 외부 사이트의 자료(미디어)를 asset으로 등록하는 방법은 MT 기본 설치 사양에에서는 존재하지 않습니다.

MT 4.1 기준으로, 별도의 plugin으로 존재하는 Media Manager를 설치하면 외부 자료를 블로그 내부의 asset으로 등록/사용 가능합니다. 아래 화면은 Media Manager를 설치한 후 Create 메뉴에 새로이 생성된 기능을 보여주고 있습니다. Flickr, YouTube, Amazon으로부터 asset을 생성하기 위한 메뉴가 생성되어 있을을 알 수 있습니다. 설치 관점에서 YouTube와 Amazon 쪽의 설정은 간단하기 때문에, 다소 복잡한 Flickr를 설정에 대한 것만을 정리하겠습니다.

일단 Media Manager를 통해 plugin을 내려 받은 후, 압축파일 내에 들어 있는 설명서에 따라 설치하면 설치 준비는 끝납니다. 설치 과정은 파일을 mt-static과 plugin 디렉토리에 단순 복사하는 것입니다. 설치 후에 MT 4.1에 재접속 하면 DB와 메뉴를 갱신한다는 메시지가 나오면서 기본 설치가 끝나게 됩니다.

다음으로 Flickr API 설정으로 가서 , 의 내용을 확인하고 복사해 놓습니다. Callback URL에는 http://MT_install_dir/mt.cgi?__mode=flickr_authed 라고 넣습니다.

MT가 열려 있는 창에서는 System Overview->Plugins를 통해 아래와 같은 화면으로 진입합니다. 와 을 넣게 되어 있는데, 앞서 복사한 값을 넣고 저장합니다.

MT가 열려 있는 상태에서 주소창에 http://MT_install_dir/mt.cgi?__mode=flickr_authed 을 그대로 복사해 넣고 URL을 열면, 아래와 같은 화면이 나옵니다. 링크를 누릅니다.

링크가 열리면서 Flickr로 접속하게 되고 아래와 같은 화면이 보여집니다. Flickr에 접속하기 위해 ID와 암호를 입력 요구하면 평소처럼 로그인을 하시면 되고 그 이후 아래와 동일한 화면을 보게 됩니다. 을 선택하면 됩니다.

Movable Type을 4.1로 업그레이드 하고 나서 Windows Live Writer를 시험 삼아 연결해 보았습니다. 개인적인 결론은... 삽질은 이제 그만! 멀티미디어보다 글 위주로 블로깅 하는 편이라 단락 구성이나 활자체 편집은 거의 하지 않지만 워드패드 수준의 편집이 필요할 때가 가끔 있었습니다. 저는 프론트페이지로 편집해서 copy&paste ㅠ.ㅠ 대략 안습이었죠. 사설이 길었군요. ^_^

Flickr사진을 Movable Type 블로그로 보내는데 고생하다 여기 까지 오셨죠? ㅎㅎ 지식 공유 차원에서 간략하게 정리해 보겠습니다. 웹호스팅 상에서 Movable Type운영하실 경우 입니다.

Movable Type이나 blog platform의 내부 구동 원리나 원론적인 얘기는 빼고 (저도 잘 모르고) 현상적으로 제일 안 되는 부분은 아래 그림 부분일 것입니다. 자신의 블로그에 접속하기 위한 1. 주소, 2. 사용자 이름 3. 암호 입니다.

주소는 mt-xmlrpc.cgi 에 접근하기 위한 URL 입니다. 당연히 설치를 본인이 스스로 하셨을 것이기 때문에 mt-xmlrpc.cgi의 위치를 넣는 것은 문제가 없을 것입니다.
사용자 이름: 블로그 관리를 위해 mt.cgi 를 열고 접근할 때 넣는 ID 입니다.
암호: 저도 이 부분 때문에 삽질 많이 했습니다. 여기서의 암호는 2.의 사용자 이름과 함께 입력하는 암호가 아닙니다. Movable Type에 로그인 하신 후 System Overview => Users 또는 Manage => Users로 가면 별도의 암호를 설정하도록 되어 있습니다. (Movable Type API) 설정이 되어 있지 않거나 잘 모르시면 새로 설정 하시면 됩니다.

다시 처음의 Flickr 화면에서 1., 2., 3.에 해당되는 값을 넣으시면 정상 작동 됩니다.

A cycling along the riverside of Hangang

Bifurcating fresh air of glorious dawn calm, I started cycling trip from Aunt's to my home. The bicycle handed over from my best friend was not so gorgeous but enough for my trip. Packing, then putting my bag on the back seat mount was the only preparation. Two bottles of green tea bought on the way to home was meal serve to nurture myself. In sum, it took five hours and 40 minutes to cover 35.7km from northern Seoul to center of Gunpo by crossing Hangang.

I took ordinary passenger pavement from Aunt's to northern end of Yeongdong Bridge, then got connected to dedicated road for cycling along Hangang riverside. Headed for east from there to get to Yangjaecheon (one of branch streams of Hangang) I could warm up with highest speed as I could generate along this straight pathway. Yangjaecheon was the starting point of beautiful scenery of wildlife. The sunshine of rising sun in the morning welcomed me. Ducks floating in peace or resting near drainage were animals that I could meet. The road was occupied by cyclists equipped with high technology, runners got dress with functional sportswear, and strollers feeling natures.

At the end point of Yangjaecheon, I had a lunch to pile up energy in my belly :) After taking passenger pavement again from Gwacheon, I could take another cycle road in Anyang. I took a deep breadth to finalize this trip. At that time, my hip severely bruised by a saddle into unendurable pain! Repeating walking and riding unconsciously led me to home thereafter. I was completely exhausted. However, leftovers are photos and videos taken all through itinerary. Peek beauty of Hangang river side from flickr!

A live video set here below shows how octopus legs are still active even after severe cut by a chef and how dangerous they will be if they go through a throat as mentioned in wikipedia. One allegation that Korean can survive the danger comes from the fact that we always eat them over hot sauce and soju which may kill their neuron system to lessen suction by both chemical and alcoholic intoxication. Anyway, so delicious they are. :)

A challenge to no stress One saying that I encountered several days ago from a certain blog smashed an agony of mind full of stress accumulated since my birth. There are so many maxims as well as proverbs to lesson a person what to do or how to behave in doing so. On the other hand, what I found was how to think! A saying in Tibet,

"If a problem can be solved, there is no use worrying about it. If it can't be solved, worrying will do no good."

That’s logically simply. Whenever I repeat the couple of sentences in Korean, I can calm down. However, I am still reluctant to think like that way with the fear that something may fail or go wrong. Don’t feed stress any more! It’s hard to burn out stress :)

A volunteer from my home

Born in 1940s, suffered from Korean War in her childhood, sacrificed to her family so far, and she now stands at twilight of her life. What she told me last night still rings in my ears. She had a plan to serve as a volunteer wherever a hand is needed. The start of volunteering would be irregular basis. She is dexterous in dress making. Sewing machine handling was one of skill sets that she had for livelihood. Tomorrow, she will start for KKottongnae to help the needy with what she can do for one day; sewing or whatever. She is my Mother! I will welcome her on her return tomorrow.

Laziness

I recognized myself that no tension was present with me nowadays. As I do quantitative analysis for software engineering project management at office, let me do the same how much lazy I am now.

The number of live fishes in the tank: Exactly half died out. One Pleco is now biting corpse of one Gourami. Furthermore, I forgot the last date when I had poured new water into tank.
The average number of articles on blog per month: I don’t want to count. I know that I did not work a lot on article updates except blog skin change over the last month. This may be because I have nothing special to say or life is boring itself.
The number of book reading this month: Zero in perfect! My heart is full of trash. I was busy to do something every day. One thing that I have to remember is that a public library opens even Sunday.

Fortune Raising

A pig is thought of as a symbol of fortune and luck in Korea. A pig shaped money box has another meaning of wealth in addition to that two meanings, accordingly. Several days ago, I drew all coins from two money boxes weighing 4.5 kilograms and full by two thirds. The coins amounted to 130 USD approximately. Wow! This can be an auspicious jumpstart toward my fortune in the year of 2008. ^_^

Korea Overseas Volunteers Association (KOVA) hosted year end party, named, evening of Korea Overseas Volunteer (KOV) last Saturday.

It is an annual event to welcome successors returned back to Korea this season from overseas where they served as a KOV. Predecessors join together to speak high of their sacrifice as well as to congratulate on safe return with invaluable experience accumulated during their voluntary operations. In this way, the party can give us a great chance to understand diversified cultures one another simply by saying which county they were dispatched to, what they did as a volunteer, how they survived harsh living condition, whoever they collaborated with, and more.

Of course, everybody could feel great joy from the party. In addition to that happiness generated from an ordinary party organization, regional music performances triggered the rise of homesickness to attendance. African music performance out of them (I could not get the synopsis of the dance, the origin of the song, and the theme as a whole, however) aroused remembrance in Ethiopia. Regardless of my feeling based on affinity with African continent, everybody could be absorbed in dynamic and powerful rhythm from the performance. The more exposed to another culture like this, we can expand our life view wider. It's one of virtues of diversity!

Snowfall (turned into rain late night, though) welcomed all the employees from Siemens Ltd. Seoul (SLS) at the porch of hotel. (지멘스 송년회) Everybody became gregarious with colleagues over beverages and cocktails right before being seated in grand hall. Situated geographically apart from SLS headquarter all through this year, I could have a chance to meet whoever I could not keep in touch.

Dinner was so full of good touch by hotel and organizer that we could enjoy meal serve with delicate flavor represented both in recipe and table arrangement. After going through routinely formal processes like speech, toast, and the like, we could slip down to gorgeous performances rendered by three groups one by one; The first was, so called, sand animation, the second was a capella, and the last one was wind instrument play. Even though I could not understand the delicacy from them in depth, one thing sure was that they made me and all attendees enthusiastic upon their shows. Dance performance prepared by the employees was another big hit.

Lucky draw kept us stalled along the table as it did every year :) As is often the case, my patience turned out to be in vain because nothing happened to me. Several (perhaps more in team or division base) groups of people organized informal party around the venue. This party-after-party ultimately closed Siemens's calendar year.

So, what will await me during the year of 2007 at Siemens? It's up to between me and Siemens, though. What you can do is to share joy of the party with me by browsing photos from here. No aptitude for Japanese Learning?

The second term of elementary Japanese class finished with quiz. Unlike someone sensitive and talented in language acquisition, I used to pour more amount time. Diligence would make up deficiency to review, practice, memorize, and repeat what I had learned from class. However, underlying limit in time allocation for language learning keeps me behind of class pace nowadays. Quiz score confirms my justification. I am still confused with pronouns, suffixes, and conjugation that are core elements to boost minimal communication. I will change learning pattern decisively and immediately!

Siemens Year-End Party 2007 (지멘스 2007 송년회)

Inevitable personal matters kept me away off from year-end party last year as posted. There is nothing particular to prevent me from presence to this year’s party. The venue changed to COEX, InterContinental Hotel Seoul from Renaissance Hotel, allegedly, due to its limited capacity to admit all the employees to ballroom.

On the occasion of year-end, this year’s resolution did not come true in large as is often the case every year! :( Instead, I will pray for the incarnation of year 2008’s resolution while diving into beer pool :) It’s life to renew resolution undone!

Cold wind smashed Korea in winter season every year. In provision to nurture all family members during that season when vegetables and most food materials are rare or not available, housewife prepared massive amount of KimChi right before the start of winter season.

Traditionally, she had sole authority to call for all the resources available around her to complete this task critical to family in survival :) Radishes as well as Chinese cabbage, the base material for KimChi, are selected from market with the sophisticated and experienced way accumulated from her own family history. She picks carefully chilly flour, raw oyster, shrimp both in raw and salted, and others from family specific recipe.

Husband, male relatives, and grown-up children take ownership to provide physical labor to carry them from market to wherever she wants to put them. Male group usually takes the ownership simply to wash, shred, and cut them whereas female group has initiative to mix them into big bowl to form KimChi, to control the process by tasting byproduct, and finally to pack the KimChi to fit into pottery available at home. Finally, male group will put the packed KimChi into pottery buried in the backyard.

This process requires usually two days with utmost mobilization of human resources as mentioned, KimChi materials newly purchased, and kitchen utensils from the smallest knives to biggest water tank at her home. This collaborative process makes family members have a chance to improve their relationship each other with close contact and communication.

However, thanks to recent green house effect resulting in relatively high temperature in winter season and invariable availability of food material with the help of high-tech cultivation, it decreased the amount of KimChi to be prepared around this season. KimJang, meaning this special KimChi making process this, does not necessitate big fussy any more. A certain home may not do KimChang, either. Or, in some cases also with me, housewife covers KimChi only for short term not to make it sour at the end of winter season. She will make more or buy factory-made one then.

As one of walkers for the sixth moonlight of Silla walking festival, I joined a group of acquaintance and senior. The festival venue, GyeongJu, is full of glorious legacy along which we strolled overnight. Our coverage was nearly a half of 66km. Exhausted around at 4am, we dove into drinking pool with SoonDae. Regardless of full coverage, physical condition boosted from the beginning made it possible to drink two and half bottles of SoJu per person up to 6am. It clarifies that exercise improves health condition as well as drinking power :)

The first month of elementary Japanese class duly has gone tonight! Hiragana and Katana made me nearly crazy beginning the class. As of today, the class covered character sets, numbers with their derivations-another crazy part, calendar, and basic declarative sentences with nouns and pronouns. Quiz for the last day reminded me of weakness and strength. Identified weakness, in other words, what I could not complete this month, was volatile remembrance in numbers and calendar. The artificial waterfall will shut down soon as winter approaches. It’s time for me to close this year as it does. Recollecting what I have done this year, I can not pick anything best or impressive in performance and its meaning in my life. Nobody can be perfect. Nothing can fully satisfy human-being. Undergraduate school days (especially, for sophomore) were full of taking challenge and striving against it. Getting up early in the morning shaped daily lifestyle as a part of that challenge. I managed to make it a rule to start a day with fresh air. During the fall as well as winter season in Korea, early start is to break darkness at 6:00 or even at 7:00 sometimes. In other words, I faced dark mornings nearly one third days of a year! Since graduation, then, all through up to now, laziness could be overlooked with the excuse that I am a salary person competing intensively every day and night! I allotted free time slots only for sleeping. :) The photo below was taken near a depot when I waited for the first bus to catch up Japanese class scheduled to start from 6:45. I could feel the same that I had felt at that time! Can I return back to that time?

It was the April 19, 2005 that I opened this blog after testing functionalities of Movable Type. At that time, I was under way to renovate simple framed home pages into something. Weblog became one of candidates due to its growing attention over guru community in Korea. I have just mounted on the tide without serious consideration how to reorganize exiting web pages.

The terminologies like trackback kept me from easy settlement on new platform. However, repetitive trial and error made me aware of how the system works. In the meanwhile, I had a chance to upgrade Movable Type several times and added articles one by one when I was free. Linkage with Flickr and YouTube fed beauty in multiple ways. At last, this post became the 100th one! Congratulation!

Diary Note Switchover

It elapsed around two months since the restart of diary keeping, July 19, 2007. I could touch the last sheet of note book recently and have bought new one. It was great challenge to concentrate on filling the lines with daily memories. Even though I put articles in retroactive manner sometimes (writing yesterday’s diary today, the day after tomorrow, or more upon hangover recovery), I managed to cover entire traces. The old archive is the symbol of diligence over the last two months!

Photo archive in Flickr held so many fool-full-pool shots in redundancy. More than 1,500 photos had occupied the storage. I left only one shot and deleted similar ones taken in the same context with slightly different angles or gestures. Around one thousand shots can be seen now. I added tags to all the shots for easy look-up on a certain theme. An arrangement by chronical order helped me to locate a specific photo fro my memory. Rainy season ended without any long-term or high precipitation. As is often the case, beginning sunny sky, a certain typhoon smashed Korean peninsular indirectly by torrent rain fall along with thunderbolt. I was safe because everything happened (while I was sleeping in the middle of heavy noise) early dawn without my recognition. However, balcony view explained to me the details that something destroyed trees around the boundary of premises in which I live. Two stems collapsed! One is left as it is. Recollecting what I had done as a Korea Overseas Volunteer (KOV) in Ethiopia, I still wonder what the true volunteerism is. I redefined my volunteerism into "technical cooperation" in the article from KOV category of this blog because spiritual understanding in grass root level was missing. Specifically speaking, I was always busy in preparation of network with cutting edge technology, training materials, reports to the Ministry and KOICA regional office, and any other tangible matters only. At the end of stay in Ethiopia, only thing that I could do was just to keep unforgettable memory with Ethiopian around my residence. If I revisit Ethiopia as a volunteer, I will be able to behave in different way by devoting myself to understanding existing Ethiopian cultures as they are now. However, will my revisit happen? Of course, not! Whenever I read articles from "One Love Theater/Blog", I can imagine what and how the volunteers there are doing in Awassa with the spirits that I should have shared with colleagues from the Ministry of Education in Ethiopia. Flavor of and condiments to my life

I am far away off international society in Ethiopia where I cooperated with so many volunteers, advisors to Ethiopian governmental organizations, NGO staffs from over the world. However, even though I am staying in Korea I have several chances, fortunately, to travel abroad in business and/or for private matters every year. In addition to direct overseas experience above, I can hear something from whoever visited overseas. Of them, returned Korea Overseas Volunteers (KOVs) revisiting where they stayed with a certain purpose, deliver interesting stories all the time. Storied told are heartwarming anecdotes, funny happenings, cultural shocks, mythical allegation, and whatever.

Surprising fact heard from my junior recently was that the Ukraine is one of cognac producers! Cognac in the small bottle next to Ukraine doll is what I received from junior as a souvenir. We had no idea when, why, and how the Ukraine started to produce it. However, furthercuriosity is non-sense; one bottle of cognac is already at my hand. Something new always makes me open eyes toward all directions across the globe. Whenever I come to know one thing, I can add one more topic in story pool and life memory. Existence of Ukraine cognac can be the latest topic. :)

I’ve just closed Ethiopian age by continuing diary keeping from where I stopped and hitting the last sheet of notebook shown in the left side of the photo. I opened the new notebook right after returning back from ZhanJiajie. The former came from stationary shop in Ethiopia, whereas the latter from Korea. :) It is nearly six years since the last purchase of that notebook. I will not miss my invaluable history from now on. Please ask me regularly whether I keep on writing down as I swore!

Upheaval 0.4 billion years ago formed gorgeous scenery in ZhangJiaJie 張家界, Hunan province, China as shown below.

The place, ZhangJiaJie, is now getting attention for tourism from the world. The number of visitors is in increasing trend every year. In my guess by staying there a week, over 95 percent of travelers are Korean. Korean travellers hit the record every year.

Spectacular panorama is available in most of places around this area and is accessible by convenient transportation systems of bus routes and cableways altogether. The cableways give travelers a chance to experience fascinating view seen in the middle of free space.

The Chinese government designated this area as a National Geopark with a big support from central and regional government. UNESCO also confirmed exceptional and universal value of this site as a scenic and historic interest area on the world heritage list. Exploring new chances for travel as well as protecting it from damages coexists toward tourism promotion and environmental protection. This area is, allegedly, designated as a venue for rafting and related events of 2008 Olympic Games. In other words, youngsters may consider this spot as a center of extreme sports in China. Related facilities are already available and will be usable in the future with appropriate amenities. Travel destinations in or nearby ZhangJiaJie include,

중국 장가계 관광

패키지 상품으로 장가계 다녀왔습니다. 산이나 풍광 좋아하시는 분들에게는 제격인 여행지 입니다. 이미 가보신 분들께는 별 도움이 안 되겠지만 (또는 본의 아니게 사실을 호도할 수도 있겠지만 ^_^), 갈 예정이신 분들에게 조금이라도 도움이 되었으면 해서 몇 자 정리해 봅니다. 패키지로 가시든 개인적으로 일정 잡아서 가시든 공통적으로 해당될 만한 내용 위주로 적습니다.

여행사 등에 있는 자료 통해서 상상했던 것 이상이었습니다. 반대의 경우도 있었습니다. 예를 들자면 백장협 차창 관광 이었습니다. 차창 관광이라고 해서 동물원의 사파리 같이 차를 타고 백장협이라는 곳을 시간을 두고 둘러 보는 것으로 상상했죠. 실제로는 체류 기간 동안 몇 번 지나쳐 가게 되는 지역일 뿐이었습니다. 내려서 구경하거나 둘러 보는 곳이 아니고 백장협 계곡 사이로 난 도로로 지나쳐 가는 것이었죠. 물론 고대에 전쟁터였다는 나름의 역사는 있지만 다른 풍경구에 비해 특별히 다른 점은 없었습니다. 경복궁 가기 위해 시청 지나가면서 "여기가 시청 이군요" 하는 정도의 장소입니다. 별도의 시간을 내서 편성하거나 중요한 일정으로 잡지는 않아도 되는 곳입니다. 서론이 너무 길었군요.

일단 비행기는 호남성 장사 공항에 내리게 되고 장가계 까지는 버스로 이동합니다. 한 300킬로 정도 되는 반나절 이동 거리 이기 때문에 비행편에 따라 장사 시내 또는 근처에서 숙박/관광 일정을 잡으면 됩니다. 장가계 내에서는 거의 대부분의 방문지가 장가계 국가 삼림공원 내에 위치합니다. 제가 가본 곳을 대략 정리해 보겠습니다. 앞서 백장협의 예처럼 별도 일정으로 빼지 않아도 되거나 한 곳에서 같이 볼 수 있는 곳들은 괄호 안에 넣어서 표시하겠습니다.

천자산 자연 보호구(어필봉, 하룡공원, 서해, 선녀산화): 산 정상까지 케이블카로 올라 갑니다. 케이블카 아래로 보이는 풍광이 좋다고 합니다. (저는 안개 때문에 하나도 못 봤습니다.) 산책 하듯이 괄호 안에 적은 곳들을 둘러 보게 됩니다.
원가계 풍경구 (미혼대, 천하제일교, 십리화랑, 금천계곡): 원가계는 다른 곳에 비해 오르기가 힘든 면은 있지만 경치가 진~~짜 좋습니다. 십리 화랑은 모노레일로 한 10분 둘러 보는데, 힘들게 걷지 않는 다는 것 외에는 별로 특별한 것은 없습니다. 꼭대기까지 어느 정도 오르면 괄호 안의 장소를 산책하듯 둘러 보게 됩니다. 내려 오는 것은 엘리베이터로. 절벽을 이용해 엘리베이터를 만들었습니다. 황당하기는 했지만 진짜 엘리베이터가! ㅎㅎ 내려 오셔서 금천 계곡에 발 담그시고 쉬면 됩니다.
황석채: 풍경 관광의 결정체라고 하겠습니다. 여기도 케이블카로 올라 갑니다. 천문산, 천자산, 원가계와 비슷하기는 합니다만, 정상 부근의 정자에 올라 사방팔방을 둘러 보는 또 다른 묘미가 있습니다. 케이블카 경사도가 만만치 않고 속도도 빠른 편이라 약간 무서운 감도 있습니다.
천문산: 땅바닥에서 케이블카가 출발해서 거의 정상 부근까지 케이블카가 올라갑니다. 케이블 길이가 7킬로미터, 표고차 1.2킬로미터, 최대 경사각 37도! 지겨움이 느껴질 정도로 오래 탑니다. 정상 부근에 있는 천문동 하고 거기서 내려다 보는 경치 역시 좋습니다. 천문동은 정상 부근이 동굴처럼 뚫려 있는 곳입니다. 계단으로 올라야 하는 압박이 있습니다. 경사도 만만치 않습니다. 연로하신 분이 오르기에는 부담이 될 수도 있습니다.
야인곡: 장가계에 살던 원주민 (토가족) 문화 체험을 하는 공원인데, 원주민 공연이 주된 내용이라고 보시면 됩니다. 개인적으로는 비추...
용왕동: 동굴입니다. 조명발 때문인지는 몰라도 동굴 내부는 환상적인 모습을 보여주었습니다. @_@
보봉호: 해발 400미터 정도에 있는 조그만 호수입니다. 유람선으로 둘러 봅니다. 호수까지 가는 오르막 길과 계단의 압박 때문에, 역시 연로하신 분들께 다소 부담됩니다.
상강 유람: 한강 유람선처럼 배 안에서 밥 먹고 강가 야경 구경 합니다. 장사 지역입니다. 장가계에서 계단 오르내린 노력에 비하면 가장 편한 여행코스입니다.
기타(열사공원, 악록서원, 호남성 박물관): 남는 시간 놀기 뭐해서, 저 같은 패키지 여행객을 위해 구색 맞추려고 넣은 코스 같습니다. 전부 장사 지역에 있습니다. 열사 공원은 중국의 공산 혁명가 추모하는 곳, 악록 서원은 모택동이 수학한 학교 입니다. 호남성 박물관은 말 그대로 박물관으로 시설 잘 되어 있습니다.

천자산, 원가계, 황석채는 같은 국립 공원 내에 위치해 있습니다. 어차피 하루에 다 둘러볼 수 없는 코스이기 때문에 입장권을 구매하면 이틀 정도 쓰게 됩니다. 신용카드 모양의 플라스틱 입장권인데 입장할 때 마다 카드와 함께 지문을 찍어야 한다는 찜찜함이 있습니다. 케이블카, 엘리베이터, 모노레일 비용은 별도입니다. 패키지의 경우 이들 비용의 포함/불포함 여부 확인하시면 됩니다. 국립 공원 안에서는 셔틀 버스로 이동하기 때문에 위에 말씀 드린 몇 군데를 제외 하고는 걷는 일이 별로 없습니다. 앞의 세 지역을 제외하면 나머지 지역은 서로 떨어져 있는 지역입니다. 일정 편성할 때 참고 하시면 됩니다.

I attended Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training hosted by Red Cross in Korea. The nominal purpose was to update yearly based certificate as shown. I wonder whether I can perform it well in real situation. Even though today was the second time to practice CPR with mannequin, I don’t think that I may manage emergent situation properly as well as serve as first aid personnel successfully. Anyway, one thing clear is that I can do CPR with more confidence than before. On the other hands, nobody knows that my thought is true or not. Neither, do I. :(
